Wesley Goins

Wesley Eugene GoinsWesley E. Goins was born on October 27, 1925, in Mt. Pleasant Michigan, one of 13 children born to Floyd and Reatha Goins.  Wesley enlisted with the U.S. Army in 1944 with three of his brothers.  Wesley would later marry Grace Norman (deceased) and to this union four children were gifted: Diane, Ronald (deceased), Linda, and Timothy (deceased).  Wesley would many years later marry Mary Thompson and to this union was gifted two more children, Bethany and Keith.

Wesley was affectionately known to friends and family as Wes but to his children he was Daddy.  Wesley was an automobile mechanic extraordinaire.  Not just vehicles, but anything with moving parts, his nimble fingers would have it working again in short order.   He opened and operated his automobile body shop for a number of years, with his sons Timothy and Keith as his apprentices.

Wesley was always on the move, even in his golden years.  To know Wesley was to love him.  He did not meet a stranger; he spent his life making new friends and fostering old friendships.  He had an affinity for cooking and making homemade applesauce that he lovingly shared with family and friends.  Wesley absolutely loved comedians like Red Skelton, Carol Burnett, Jackie Gleason, Dean Martin, and Tim Conway to name a few.  His laughter was genuine and if you knew him, he would laugh until he was crying.   Wesley was a fantastic uncle to a host of nieces and nephews.  His absence will be felt by many.

Wesley was a spiritual man.  He loved Christian music and Christian television programs.  His faith helped him to cross to his eternal home on Thursday, January 14, 2021, after contracting the coronavirus.   Wesley was preceded in death by both of his parents, Floyd and Reatha Goins; brothers, Donald, Jesse, Floyd Junior, Denver, Charles, and Emmett Spires; sisters, Arcelia Norman, Nancy Croston, Catherine Taylor, and Frances Parsons.  His sons, Ronald and Timothy Goins also preceded him in death.

Wesley leaves to cherish many precious memories his children, Diane Hunt, Linda (Charles) Green, Bethany (Xavier) Ates, and Keith Goins; two siblings, Betty Norman and Gerald Goins.  He leaves behind his grandchildren, Kevin, Brandon, Tara, Anthony, Trinette, Andrea, Xavier II, Aidan, Nigel, and Landon James.  Wesley has several great-grandchildren and two great-great, grandchildren.

Daddy, this is not good-bye, but see you later.  Our love for you knows no boundaries.  Earth has lost a great friend, but heaven has gained an angel.  We shall, one day, meet again.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”  2 Corinthians 4:6-7.

The family of Wesley Goins wishes to thank each person who showered us with love during this time.  Each and every deed, kind word, and prayer are appreciated.  We want to thank Estes-Leadley Funeral Home for the professional services rendered.

Uncle Wes was undoubtedly my favorite! He was always laughing, playing, and teasing me. He had a love for animals. When he worked at the market, instead if throwing out the bad produce, he would make sure that the deer got plenty of food as well as the buffalo he befriended. The animals would eat right out of his hands! Uncle Wes made every attempt to keep in touch with family. He took many many pictures. He was a friend to everyone. I remained close to him until the end. He will forever be in my heart and I will miss him. I loved him so very much! May you rest in peace.

Wes from the time I first met him he was someone
who kept a smile on his face and he shared it with
everyone he came in contact with.
Wes was “old school”. I truly will miss him.

I always loved uncle Wes. I loved to listen to him and daddy talk about the crazy things they done. With tears running down everyone’s face and trying to understand every word because they were laughing so hard.
I got to visit a couple times via FaceTime. I truly regret not checking my messages on messenger. I missed a FaceTime call December 23rd. I feel horrible! I wish I had made the time to call you in January when I saw the missed call. I’m so thankful that I will see you in heaven. We truly lost a great man.

Uncle Wesley always made you feel extra special and loved. He had the biggest heart with room for everyone. I can see him and my Dad sitting on the front porch reminiscing about the good old days. I just don’t think they make em like that anymore do they. Much Love to the family.

Uncle Wes, you were more than an Uncle!! You gave me so much love in my life time. I’ll always remember our talks and the way your words would pick me up in my darkest times. You always made me feel special.. your laughter and your radiant smile. I’m going to miss you so much. I could come to you broken and beaten and you’d remind me, Jesus loves me. That this is just a trial and you loved me.. Thank you Uncle Wes. Your forever in my heart. I’ll be seeing you and our family one day. Heaven gained a mighty Soul…

Writing on behalf of the Ohio contingent of Normans, a heartfelt farewell to Wesley Eugene. We will always remember him as witty and humorous – and mechanically talented; Dad would sometimes ask for Wes’ help with our old cars.

Wesley represented a generation of our long-lived, intertwined families that has now mostly passed. We will always remember these members of “The Best Generation” for their work, sacrifice and persistence in the face of the obstacles our country often placed in their way. Let’s hope we are up to the task of taking their best paths and walking in their shoes in the time left to us.

Cheers, Uncle!

Wes, you were family to us for 35+ years, and the family of Gay Cowels will always love you, cherish our memories of you and your influence in our lives and hearts. I have never met a human being as kind, generous, accepting, loving and sweet as you. To Wes’ family: our hearts grieve with and for you. The obituary is just wonderful, and so captures the Wes that we all knew and loved. May God comfort you each time you feel the sorrow and loss. He loved you all so very much.

As for me, I believe he got his dance with Mom in heaven. Just before she died, he had a dream of them dancing, though it had been years since they had seen one another. Recently, he dreamed it again, and also told me of another dream where she wanted to take him on a trip in his car, but she wanted to drive. We laughed as he said he had to put the seat all the way up so she could reach the pedals. That gives me comfort.

One of my fondest memories of Uncle Wes was from New Year’s Day several years ago. I got my mom an electric roaster for Christmas and she let me break it in for NYD with some baby back ribs. I also made some cabbage and black eyed peas. You know, the typical good luck meal or variation of it. Mom said that Uncle Wes was coming over for something, I don’t remember what it may have been. But he timed it just right and came in just as everything was done cooking. He really enjoyed that meal. I can still see him sitting on the bench at the table in the kitchen…. My mom always had the most beautiful flowers in her flower beds and most of them came from Uncle Wes. I remember all the times we went over to his house to pick some up and also got the chance to visit with Harley. Uncle Wes was so kindhearted, so giving, always there to lend a hand if you needed it and always had a smile on his face. He will be missed, but he will most certainly never be forgotten.
