Wilbert Wayne Winchell

Lansing, MI

Wilbert Wayne Winchell died unexpectedly on December 6, 2017, one day short of his 67th birthday.

Wayne was born in Jackson, Mich., on Dec. 7, 1950, son of Wilbert L. and Dora E. (Blay) Winchell. He grew up in Bunkerhill, Michigan, and graduated from Leslie High School and Michigan State University. Wayne worked as a commercial banker in the Lansing area for more than thirty years, retiring as Vice President of Commercial Lending at Citizens Bank.

He received the gift of life in 2010 when he underwent a double lung transplant. He was so very grateful for that gift every day for the past 7 years. He loved Michigan State basketball and football, the Detroit Tigers and was a golf enthusiast throughout his life. He had his first hole-in-one this past summer and shot a 37 three days before his death. He was a past member of Trinity United Methodist Church and currently a member of Dimondale United Methodist Church. He had a tender spot in his heart for cats, for children, for the elderly and for all who had been dealt a harsh hand in life. Wayne felt especially blessed by God for granting him a full and enjoyable life.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, his nephews, Timothy Wayne Welford, Matthew Aaron Fry, and his younger brother, Ronald T. Winchell. He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 46 years, Sandy, and by two sisters, Sandra W. Welford of East Lansing, and Trudy E. Mitchell (John) of Leslie, and a loving family of relatives, in-laws and dear friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 11, 2017, at Riverview Church (Westside Venue), 7533 W. St. Joe Hwy., Lansing. His family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Anyone wishing to make contributions in remembrance of Wayne should do so to a charity of their choice that helps those who cannot help themselves and register with Michigan Gift of Life. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Rest In Peace My Friend. Heaven is gaining an intelligent, funny, kind and simply good man who will very likely teach all of the apostles to golf with the best of them! Our world is less bright without your dynamic positive presence. We will greatly miss you.

So many happy memories with bowling, twilight golf, softball and game nights. Always a good time with much laughing. We will hold those memories until we meet again.
