Uyvonne June Johnson
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10”
On Thursday, August 3, 2023, Uyvonne June Johnson of Holt, Michigan, peacefully passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and service to others. Born in Lakeview, Michigan, in 1932 to George and Bertha Teske, Uyvonne’s journey was marked by compassion and dedication to her family, community, and faith. She also demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advocating for women and children’s issues, fighting for social justice, and ending racism and hunger.
Uyvonne’s life took a beautiful turn when she met and then married the love of her life, Perry M. Johnson, in 1951. Their love story was one of devotion and resilience, spanning an impressive 72 years until Perry’s passing in December 2022. Together, they embarked on a journey that included raising five children, cultivating strong connections in various communities, and nurturing a deep-rooted faith in the United Methodist Church.
An exceptional student with a passion for writing, Uyvonne earned a full scholarship to Michigan State University. Although her dream of becoming a reporter was put on hold, she channeled her gift for communication and organization into serving others. Uyvonne was a dedicated member of United Methodist Women and Church Women United, offering her leadership, compassion, and empathy to those in need.
Beyond her involvement in the church, Uyvonne was renowned for her culinary talents. Her delicious cooking and legendary pies became a source of joy for many. From hosting church and Kiwanis dinners to supporting bake sales and gathering her family for large feasts, she used her culinary gifts to touch the lives of countless individuals.
Uyvonne’s life exemplified the values of faith, love, and service to others, leaving an indelible impact on her family, friends, and community. She will be deeply missed by her sister Deloris Davenport, her children Kathleen (Duncan) Lawrence, Stephen (Kristine) Johnson, Randall (Tamara Rambis) Johnson, Penny (Kurt) Shanks, and Julayne (Timothy) Gensterblum. Additionally, she leaves behind a legacy through her 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish her memory.
A woman of unwavering faith, Uyvonne was a devoted member of Holt United Methodist Church, where she spent countless years with United Methodist Women, dedicating herself to serving God and her community.
To honor Uyvonne’s remarkable life and the love she shared, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Holt United Methodist Church, located at 2321 N. August 7, 2023 at 12:33 pmUyvonne was such an inspiration. I loved to see her at American Correctional Association Conferences as she helped Perry represent Michigan so well. Her positive energy and spirit were always infectious. She loved to recount the achievements of her children and grandchildren and absolutely glowed when she talked of them. She will be missed.
