Theodore “Ted” Lawson

Theodore “Ted” Lawson, born September 6th, 1960, passed away the afternoon of October 8th, 2023, at age 63. Heaven gained an angel, however his 2 granddaughters (Aurora Karr & Cassandra Kent), 2 daughters (Brittany & Heather Lawson), 2 brothers (Andy & Bradford Lawson), and his mother, Mary Jo Cordell (Lawson) lost their warrior.

Ted served his country in the United States Marine Corps before the birth of his daughters. He had been employed as a Journeyman Butcher with Meijer for the last 37 years, something he found he loved after serving his country. As well as at Meijer, he found a lot of pride in actively serving his community and was very well known for what he did. He was a major voting rights activist and was constantly involved in many efforts to educate the public about their voter rights, candidate stances, and their policies.

Although he is gone, he will never be forgotten.

The viewing will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Washtenaw St., Lansing, MI 48933. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Tabernacle of David Church, 2645 W. Holmes Rd., Lansing, MI 48911. On Saturday, an additional viewing time from 12:00-1:00 p.m. will be available at the church, for anyone unable to be at the viewing on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ted’s memory to an online fundraiser set up by Walter Sorg through Go Fund Me or to Everytown for Gun Safety.

Online condolences may be left for his family at www.EstesLeadley.com.

So sorry to hear that my cousin, Teddy, is no longer with us physically. Fortunately, I have many fond memories of visits to the Lawson family home in nearby Yipsilanti, while growing up in Battle Creek, years ago. He was super intelligent, incredibly compassionate and possessed a charming whit. He’ll be missed by many to be sure.

Ted demonstrated to us what a citizen is in a democracy. Ted cared what happened in the community and he cared what happened to the people in this community. The foundation of all of this was his commitment and allegiance to our constitution. Ted will be missed. How we honor his life is to make our commitment to pick up his staff and continue to work for the principles that Ted personified and worked for every day.

Ted spent hours of his free time teaching me– a stranger– the ropes of campaigning when I was a first-time candidate, simply because he believed in me. He selflessly stepped up to do the hard, but noble work of democracy. It’s impossible to calculate the breadth and depth of the impact of his advocacy on the people of mid-Michigan, including on people he would never meet. But those of us who worked with him or were championed by him will always remember him as unfailingly kind and extraordinarily good.

I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of Ted. I have gotten to know him the last few years. And I’m so sorry to hear of his passing. He was a great guy and very passionate about his community and the Democratic Party. He was a fun person to be around. He loved music and his daughters! RIP
Ted
