Steven W. Gray

Steven W. Gray, of Grand Ledge, MI, passed away on Thursday, August 4, 2016, at the age of 55.

He was a 1979 graduate of Belleville High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State in 1985 and later his master’s in Career/Technical education from Western Michigan. He worked many years in the restaurant business: opening crews at Bennigan’s, was part owner of Bogies Cafe, and opening with Trippers in the late ‘80s, where he made many friends and memories. He was also deli director of Feldpausch food stores for 3 years. He found his true calling in 2004 and started teaching culinary arts for Heartlands Institute of Technology. He loved his students, mentoring many in life and not just cooking, so proud that many went on to culinary careers.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sandra (Sawyers); his “angel from heaven,” Stephanie Jane; his mother, Phyllis; brother, Mark (Lexie); nieces and nephews; his best friend and golf buddy, Greg Newsom; and many friends and students. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Gray, last August.

A celebration luncheon will be held on Sunday, August 21, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at his “happy place” Grand Ledge Country Club, 5811 St. Joe Hwy. Donations for a culinary scholarship for Heartlands Institute of Technology can be made c/o Sandra Gray, P.O. Box 480, DeWitt, MI 48820.

He was such a great teacher! I couldn’t have asked for a better culinary arts experience. Thank you for everything. Extremely talented in the kitchen and known to be a little goofy. =)

Though I did not take his courses, Mr. Gray was always someone who had a smile on his face. I enjoyed seeing him walk the hallways of our school. The district has lost a great teacher, mentor, colleague, and friend. The lives he touched, and will continue to touch, are many.

My deepest condolences to the Gray family. Steve was one of my “kids” in a German 1 class I tutored in high school. Though I hadn’t seen him in many years, all of my kids will always hold a special place in my heart. May God comfort the family.
