Stephanie H. Barch

Age 96, of East Lansing, passed away on January 7, 2021.  She was born on April 10, 1924 in Berlin, Germany to Robert Martin Henoch and Alice (Oppenheimer) Henoch.  During WW2, the family left Germany for England in 1939.  They were granted entry into the United States in 1941 and settled in Rochester, New York.  She graduated with a BA in Biology from Rochester University and then received a master’s degree in Biology from Indiana University in 1949.  In the same year she met and married her husband Abbey Barch at the university and they spent 61 happy years together.  They then went to the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA and received their PhD degrees in 1952, Stephanie in Biology and Abbey in Psychology.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Abbey and her son Daniel Maccabee Barch.  Surviving are: son, David (Daverille Sher); 3 grandchildren, Rachel and Jack Barch and Casey Figueredo; sister, Luci Sharp; daughter-in-law, Joan Barch; and sister-in-law, Joan Barch.

After completing their PhDs, they moved to Washington, DC where David and Daniel were born.  They relocated to East Lansing, MI in 1955 where both Stephanie and Abbey worked for Michigan State University, Stephanie as a Research Associate in Embryology and Abbey as a professor in Psychology.  Stephanie left MSU in the late 1960s and went to work for the City of East Lansing in 1971 from which she retired in 1994.  She volunteered with many organizations in East Lansing and at Michigan State University, and was the first female member of the Board at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.

Due to COVID a memorial service is not yet scheduled. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

I was so fond of Stephanie, she worked with me on many Shaarey Zedek projects, always with a smile
