Shirley Ann Pesch

Shirley Ann Gettman Pesch passed away on December 8, 2023, at Eaton Gardens, Charlotte, MI, after a period of declining health. She was born on June 15, 1929, in Detroit, MI to Frederick and Thelma Gettman and spent most of her early life in Flint. Shirley graduated from Flint Central High School in 1946. She married John B. Morrow on May 26, 1950, and they had 3 children: Paula Morrow Ryba (Robert), Duncan Morrow, and Claudia Morrow Martin (Frank).

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Thelma Gettman, John Morrow, her husband, Joseph P. Pesch, to whom she was married for 17 years, and her daughter, Claudia Jane.

She is survived by daughter Paula and son-in-law Robert; son, Duncan; 5 granddaughters, Kiley Ryba Arnold (Jeff), Kathryn Ryba Tilson (Chad), Ericka Ryba, Emily Ryba, and Hannah Martin; and 4 great-grandsons, Maxx Arnold, Gus Arnold, Zeke Arnold, and Silas Tilson.

Shirley pursued a number of careers over her long lifetime, including first and foremost, wife and mother. Her last position preceding retirement was as Director of the LPN Association of Michigan. In this capacity she arranged many successful conventions, including a memorable one on Mackinac Island and even one on a cruise. She spoke before the Michigan Legislature, in support of LPNs. She owned 2 apricot miniature poodles, Beau and Andy, that she adored. She was sole caregiver for her mother, Thelma and her husband, Joe, during the last weeks of fatal illnesses. Shirley was very proud of her Chippewa Heritage, with a connection to Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and her German Heritage. Shirley enjoyed many hobbies, including crafting, sewing, knitting, decorating, and especially genealogy research. Despite difficult health challenges in her later years, Shirley persevered and maintained a wicked sense of humor.

The family is particularly grateful to Amy, Shirley’s great friend, aide and hairdresser, and Laura, her kind nurse, among many loving and attentive caregivers on Melody Trail at Eaton Gardens. Also, having offered kindness and friendship were Sue and Ari.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Lansing, MI.

Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel.
