Sharon S. Wiegandt

Rockford, MI
Formerly of Williamston, MI

Sharon Sue (Kaufman) Wiegandt, loving mother, grandmother, wife, daughter, aunt, sister, cousin and friend to all she knew, passed away January 5, 2025, after a brief illness.

She was born December 14, 1943, in Flint, Michigan. As the daughter of a State Police Lieutenant Colonel, Sharon moved several times as a child, living in Flint, South Haven, Redford, Farmington and Bay City. She moved to Lansing during her senior year of high school and graduated from Lansing Eastern in 1961. She continued her education at Michigan State University earning her bachelor’s degree in Political Science, with a minor in French and a concentration in Sub-Saharan African Studies. During her college years, she studied abroad in Switzerland, and while overseas also traveled to France, Italy and Ireland.

She married Ronald Edmund Wiegandt in June of 1966. In the Spring of 1971, they moved to the Wiegandt Family Farm in Williamston where they started their business (Ron’s Service Center), built their home, raised two daughters, and lived happily for 45 years. Sharon was an expert gardener and developed incredible landscapes. When she was not gardening, she spent time volunteering for school and community events, including the Williamston Fire Department Auxiliary, where Ron was a Lieutenant. Sharon was an avid reader, devouring a book a week or more if time allowed. Travel to the family beach house in Venice, Florida, provided decades of joy. Sharon and Ron loved to host gatherings including family reunions, Williamston Fire Department picnics, weddings, and welcoming guests for overnights and extended stays. Countless other celebrations and parties were always being held on “The Farm.” After Ron retired, they opened an in-house daycare, and when grandchildren arrived, they turned their focus to them. In 2015, Sharon and Ron moved to Rockford, Michigan, to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Surviving to remember her and celebrate her life are her daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Bob Gould of Rockford, and Cathrin and Jim Finney of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Ilene Gould and Isaac Gould; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Pamela Wiegandt, Sheila Brockmeyer, and Richard Wiegandt; nieces and nephews, Eric Wiegandt, Steve (Beth) Wiegandt, Melissa Cummings and Sarah (John) Rohl; great-nieces and nephews, Jessica Wiegandt, Jo Wiegandt, Albert Wiegandt, Ethan Davis, Audrey Cummings, Parker Cummings and Onalee Rohl, along with many wonderful and cherished cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Melvin (1999) and Lucinda Kaufman (2011), brother-in-law Ralph Wiegandt (2011), sister Onalee Davis (2012), and her beloved husband of nearly 54 years, Ronald (2019).

Visitations will be held at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, Lansing, Michigan, on Friday, January 10, 2025, from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., with a short celebration of life service to follow at 10:00 a.m. Private interment will be at Foote Cemetery in Williamstown Township.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her honor to her favorite charities: the ACLU, Southern Poverty Law Center, WKAR Public Television and Radio, The Spartan Marching Band Fan Club, or to any local library or food pantry.

Received this news with great sadness. Sharon was such a good soul and always a joy to be around. Sharon and Ron helped make my family’s 20 year stay in the Williamston area a very memorable one. We will hold the Wiegandt family in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

Cat and Susan,
I have so many fond memories of your mom, and dad of course. Spending time on the farm was always so special to me. Your mom was such a gracious host and always welcomed me with a big smile. She will be missed, but know she’s not gone, only transitioned to the spiritual realm.

With all my love,

Sharon was our sweet sweet neighbor starting in 2015. She was so kind and generous. She would often stop by on her way from the mailbox. One spring she lent me lots of gardening tools as we put landscape around our neighboring condo. We will miss her greatly.
