Ruth E. Coon
Ruth Eleanor Benedict was born in Lansing, Michigan, on June 5, 1919, in the house her father built on the corner of Walnut and Grand River (Franklin St). At the age of 98, she passed away on October 30, 2017. Aside from 3 years spent teaching in Tawas City, Ruth lived her whole life within a mile of her birthplace.
Graduated from Lansing’s Central High School in 1937 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from Michigan State College in 1941. She remained a loyal Spartan fan throughout her life.
In 1952, while teaching Nursery school, Ruth met and married Melvin Coon and they later welcomed two daughters.
Ruth enjoyed sewing, weaving, and knitting, to name a few. She filled her home with her creations as well as gifting to family and friends. She loved to experiment with new projects. During the Christmas season Ruth’s home was full of the aroma of baking and candy making.
Ruth had a “travel bug”! She and Mel took their daughters on many family vacations throughout the USA and Canada. In later years, she traveled to Hawaii, Europe and took cruises to Alaska and through the Panama Canal.
Ruth was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church and a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution for 65 years.
Ruth is survived by her daughters, Kathy Draper and Judy Stubleski, sons-in-law Steven Draper and Eugene Stubleski, grandsons Justin, Joel, and Jacob Stubleski, granddaughter Jessica Price and husband Andrew, and great-granddaughters Olivia and Zoe Price.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 6, 2017, in the chapel at Deepdale Memorial Gardens, Lansing. Memorial contributions may be made to Sparrow Home Hospice or Meals On Wheels. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

I enjoyed her company while getting her to places she needed to go later in life. If you had a history question she was a wealth of knowledge I will miss the genealogy talks we shared anther flowers and most of all just her presence. My love to both Judy and family and Kathy and Steve you are all in my thoughts

November 6, 2017 at 10:44 pmI join my father, Frank Moss, in offering thanks for Ruth Coon’ s life. As part of Ruth’s long friendship with our mother, Nancy Ludlum Moss, there were several years of Christmas Jigsaw Puzzle Competitions. Each family presented the other with the most “diabolical” puzzle encountered since the previous year. The family to finish their puzzle first notified the other. I cannot remember the Mosses ever besting the Coons! It was fun to try to get a puzzle to stump them. But they were up for the challenge each time! I cherish the felt ornaments Ruth designed and sewed. They warm each Christmas for me. It is fitting she passed away so close to All Saints Day–at the beginning of her favorite season–The Holidays! My best wishes, always, to Kathy, Judy and their families–right down to the next pair of sisters who are Ruth’s great granddaughters. I will remember Ruth Coon always. Barbara Moss

November 7, 2017 at 9:24 amSending my heartfelt prayers for peace and comfort for the family on the passing of Mrs. Ruth Coon. I knew her through her daughter Judy who has been my dear friend since high school. Fond memories of her are woven throughout my life and I will never forget her warmth and her welcoming spirit. Ruth Coon was a true example of the Proverbs 31 woman and I am blessed to have known her.

I just tried to bring a smile and a little conversation.
It was always a joy to drop off her meal.
Enjoyed her creations around the house.
