Roger T. May

Lansing, Michigan

Our beloved father and grandfather died on March 11, 2015, in Haslett, MI. He was born on July 23, 1929 in Lansing, MI, the son of Jack and Marjorie May. Roger attended school at Holt until the 7th grade and then moved to Lansing and attended Resurrection High School where he graduated in 1947. Roger set many city, high school and state records in baseball as a pitcher. He was drafted and spent 7 seasons playing professional baseball in the Phillies organization. His military service included being stationed in Germany from 1950-52. Mr. May received his B.S. degree from the University of Texas in 1957 and his M.A. from W.M.U. in 1984. Roger taught and coached at Resurrection H.S. before transferring to Lansing Eastern where he coached baseball and football. He retired in 1990.

He was elected to the Lansing City Council in 1967 and served two terms including Mayor pro-tem in 1972 and 73. At Resurrection Church he served as usher, Education Board and Credit Union Board member. He was also a member of the Catholic War Veterans, American Legion, past president of the Knights of Columbus and Eagles Lodge in Lansing. He spent many summers playing and coaching in the Lansing City Men’s baseball league. Roger loved to fish and play golf. He also enjoyed watching his kids and grandchildren play sports.

Roger was married to Olive Ann Droste from 1950 until 1998. Together they had 8 children, six of whom survive, Ted (Margaret), Tony (Ann), Terry May, Terese (Ron) McInnis, Torry Gekle, and Mary May. His son Tim died in November 2014 and daughter Tina was killed in a traffic accident in 1968. Roger is also survived by his 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Randi May. He was also preceded in death by his parents and sister Betty Bressette.

The Funeral Mass for Roger May and Annie May will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at Church of the Resurrection, 1531 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. The family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 24th with a Rosary service at 7:00 p.m. at the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Monsignor Gabriel’s Scholarship Fund through Resurrection Grade School. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

May your cherished memories of Roger bring you comfort and may knowing that he is in God’s loving embrace bring you peace. He was a remarkable man.

I’m sorry to hear about your grandfather’s passing. he was a good man. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire May family.
