Robert M. Thrun
On December 2, 2021, Robert M. “Bob” Thrun, 90, passed away at his winter home in Estero, Florida.
For 68 years, Bob was married to Marjorie (Ackerman), 89, who preceded him in death in August 2021. Together, they raised one son, Richard, and two daughters, Susan Kay Drake (who died in 2019), and Karen Heyden. Four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
Born on May 30, 1931 to Caroline and Fred Thrun, Bob graduated from Lansing Sexton High School, then earned a BA from Michigan State University and a JD with high distinction from Wayne State University.
In 1959, Bob began practicing law with his parents at Thrun Law Firm, focusing on municipal and school law. Bob and his father drafted the Michigan Community College Act of 1966. His expertise in school law, particularly in election and public finance law, provided school clients with wise counsel over the years. For half a century, Bob oversaw the growth of Thrun Law Firm, mentoring (in his unique way) each new attorney. Over 500 Michigan public school organizations are served by 27 Thrun Law Firm attorneys, with offices in East Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Novi. Thrun Law Firm celebrates its 75th year this year, a legacy to Bob and his parents.
Known for his quick wit, Bob lobbed zingers with the speed and precision he acquired as a skilled artillery officer. Bob had a larger than life personality and enjoyed life to its fullest. With the mantra, “work hard, play hard,” Bob enjoyed his cars, motorcycles, and boats. Marjorie attended both the French and the German Wine Academies and was a wine buyer for Knapps Department store. Bob and Marjorie shared a passion for fine wine.
A visitation for Bob and Marge will be held at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Monday, December 13, 2021 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., with open comments at 6:30 p.m. Military funeral honors will be provided for Bob, who served as an officer in the USAR Infantry (1953-1965, active duty 1954-1956).
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Capital Area Humane Society, Lansing, Michigan.

December 8, 2021 at 12:48 pmWhen I worked as a veterinary technician from 1976 through 1980 and met Caroline Thrun and her Cocker Spaniel, little did I know that I would eventually meet her son Bob and his lovely wife Marge in the ’90s. I worked for Bob until his retirement and then for all the people he trained for the years after that. He always knew my face and had a smile for me whether or not her remembered my name. I will always remember them with fondness.

December 9, 2021 at 1:28 pmI had the pleasure of working with both Bob and his mother Caroline. Started with Caroline in the early 70’s. Bob helped our district with bond work over the years.
Both provided excellent advise and legal assistance. Had the opportunity to “bend elbows” with Bob at many conferences. Enjoyed his outgoing personality. He did know his wines!
I often think of Caroline’s world map posted on her office wall in which she put pins in noting her many travels.
Deepest sympathy to Bob’s extended family.

January 18, 2022 at 3:57 pmHaving learned of Marge and Bob’s passing only recently, I, also, missed paying my respects in person at the service. I worked for Thrun, Maatch and Nordberg (now known as Thrun Law Firm) from 1979 to my retirement in 2010. Other than not remembering names 100% of the time, Bob was “sharp as a tack” and “did not suffer fools gladly”. He could convey his thoughts so easily just by peering over the top of his eyeglasses, tipping his head down a bit and giving you “that look”. I admired and respected Bob as a boss for many reasons, but primarily because he was always fair minded. When in Marge’s company, she was gracious, unassuming and playful….like the bicycle bell on her walking cane. I heard a few of Marge and Bob’s exploits so I know they were well-suited and enjoyed those 68 years together. I send my condolences to their family and friends.
