August 14, 2020 at 4:29 pmI am sad to hear the news of Rich’s passing. I hadn’t seen him in many years. He took a chance on me as a DJ, and later a manager and F&B director at the Midway Hotel. He loved music and we had many a discussion on music trivia, favorite bands, etc. Maybe the hardest working man I ever met. Work was always a little easier with Rich at your side. He had a boisterous and infectious sense of humor and loved good conversation. My condolences to Mary and the family.

August 14, 2020 at 6:12 pmI was truly saddened to hear that Rich had passed away. I hadn’t seen him in several years, but have many fond memories of working with him at the Midway/Hoffman House. He had such a strong work ethic. I remember he would jump in and work in any area that needed help. His smile was contagious! My deepest sympathies and thoughts of comfort go out to his family.

August 14, 2020 at 9:52 pmMy deepest condolences to Mary, Bo, Emily and the entire family. Rich was the kind of boss that anyone would dream of having. He was funny, fair, highly intelligent and his smile was contagious. I have so many fond memories of my many years working with him at Roxy’s and The Midway. There are too many to count. When he made a shy cocktail server ( me) Employee of the Year at the annual banquet, it really made me proud. He was so kind. I believe he was in a car accident with his Corvette on the way that night. He still made it. He was just a beautiful soul with a genuine heart of gold. He was in a class all by himself. RIP. – “ Pooh”.

August 14, 2020 at 10:06 pmSo painfully sad to hear of Rich’s passing. He was the type of boss a person would love to work for. He was down to earth, fair, extremely kind and highly intelligent with a quick wit! His smile was contagious and wherever he went, many of his former employees followed. Everyone loved and appreciated his presence. He was a kind soul. May he Rest In Peace . My deepest condolences to Mary, Bo, Emily and the entire family. My nickname of “ Pooh” he bestowed upon me as stood the rest of time since 1989. I will always have happy memories of him.

August 15, 2020 at 6:29 amMy heart is broken hearing the news of Rich’s passing. I cannot say enough good things about him. Not only did he hire me back multiple times, but he gave me the confidence to start my career and life. He was a mentor, boss and most of all friend. One of the most genuine, hard working, supportive and kind hearted people that I’ve ever known. I owe him so much. My deepest condolences to Mary, Emily, Bo and the rest of his family. The sun is a little less bright today.

August 15, 2020 at 11:08 amOn behalf of the Costello family, we wish to extend our deep sorrow on the passing of our former manager,Rich, at the BW Midway Hotel to the Suurmeyer family. Laura, Nick & myself were employed at the hotel in different departments but we all were joined by the family atmosphere that Rich & Mary created. There wasn’t a harder working manager than Rich, from cleaning toilets, setting up tables, fixing registers to cooking up & organizing huge holiday banquets, and so much more. He was a friend or a father figure to all of us at one time or another. Then he re-created the same hard wording role at Royal Scot. No one will ever replace Rich. We will remember him fondly forever in our thoughts & hearts

August 15, 2020 at 11:09 amSuch sad news of Mr. Suurmeyer passing. Because he was my boss I could not call him Rich. I worked for him at MidWay Hotel and Royal Scot. Most of all he was a great friend and Mary too. They trusted my husband & I with their beloved Boxer “MAX” we will always be grateful for that wonderful gift. Oh how he loved his birthday Pumpkin Pies I made him till I retired from Royal Scot. Mary, Bo and Emily all of you will always have a place in my heart. Also Wild Bill and Bett as Bo would call his grandparents. Thanks for all the memories.

August 15, 2020 at 12:05 pmI am speaking for the whole Kelly family when I say we are heart broken to hear of Rick’s passing. We go back many years with him as not only a friend but helping us with both Jon and Jill’ weddings, and planning many of our Everett reunions at Midway. He knew the business of food, drinks and entertaining. I don’t remember ever seeing him without a smile. Rick would always go out of his way for his friends. Everyone loved him. Such a gentle giant. He will be sorely missed. Only regret is we hadn’t seen him for a few years. Wish we could turn back time. Sincere condolences to his family.

August 16, 2020 at 8:59 amI am extremely sorry and sad to hear of Rich’s passing. He was a great man with integrity, strong work ethic but never took himself too seriously. I met Rich wephen I was 15 at the Capitol Park Hotel where he eventually became a Manager. We stayed in touch as I grew into my 20’s seeing him at the Midway Motor Lodge. He taught me a lot about life as we would have many conversations. He was a good man with a good heart.

August 16, 2020 at 10:41 amI hired into the Midway Hotel reluctantly as a coat check worker because I desperately needed a job. I said that would be the extent of what I would do, because I swore I would never work in another restaurant. Well…I got talked into being a hostess in the Hoffman House by you-know-who. Then when the Black Forest Lounge became Roxy’s and needed DJs, that same person encouraged me to go for the position. That led to one of the most memorable times in my life. I worked full time at Roxy’s while I finished my associate’s in Media Technology degree at LCC, and continued part time after I started full time work at WLNS-TV. All in all I worked at Roxy’s for more than a decade, and made friends and memories that will be with me forever. Thank you Rich. May you rest in peace.

August 16, 2020 at 11:13 amWe were so sad to hear of Ricks passing. “Big Sur”s smile and friendly manner will be greatly missed. Not only did we play in the pigs and freaks football together , we played a lot of basketball , Rick was a natural athlete. When our second daughter got married , we had her wedding reception at the midway, as we did for our first daughter, For our second daughter the room was over booked . Rick and Mary closed down Roxy’s and set it up for the reception. It was perfect. Please know that our prayers our with you Mary and your family. Greg and Pat Keast

August 16, 2020 at 1:00 pmRick(Moose) was always larger than life to me. My oldest brother Bills best man and best friend. May they both continue their tennis competition in Heaven. I was so honored to work as a wedding DJ at both Midway and Royal Scott. Richard was a consummate professional and a joy to work with, and you could not ask for a better food and beverage manager for your event! My dear parents Bill and Ruby loved him and so did my brothers Jim and Ed. God bless Mary and your family.

August 16, 2020 at 2:33 pmIt’s been many years since my Roxy/Midway days, but never forgotten. Rich not only employed me, but both my kids. We were not co-workers there, but rather a family and he was the patriarch. Treated my kids to the best sweet sixteen party ever! My heart goes out to his family. He will be missed.

August 16, 2020 at 5:43 pmSo sad to hear about Ricks passing. We met so many years ago when our moms worked together and parents played bridge. In high school we had always agreed that if there was a party and we weren’t dating anyone we would be each other’s dates! Such a great guy…….
Heaven has gained a special person. Hugs and prayers to the family.

August 17, 2020 at 8:45 amI was so saddened to hear that Rich died. Too, too young in my world view. My heartfelt and most sincere condolences. I knew Rich many, many years ago when he was a manager at Coral Gables in East Lansing and I was a hostess, server, and sometimes bartender. I have so many memories of those ‘work hard, play hard’ MSU days when Rich was an important part of my life. Rest in Peace, my friend.

August 17, 2020 at 4:18 pmMary, Shirley and I send our heartfelt condolences to you and your family at this time of loss. As the previous posts attest, Rich’s contagious smile and personality (which were clearly evident in the college days) continued on through the years and were treasured by many. It was my pleasure to spend countless hours with him as a co-worker, softball/bowling teammate, tenant/roommate at the Moose Lodge, and friend. Affectionately known as “The Moose”, it was Rich, the person, who demonstrated by example the right way to conduct one’s self down life’s path. May he Rest In Peace and may you take comfort in knowing of the people he touched.

August 17, 2020 at 10:18 pmJean and I were floored when we heard about the death of a great friend and great guy.Our hearts go out to Mary and the family. Rich, Don G, Doctor John, and I were together both at work and at play. Often closing the Gables then playing pinball until the sun came up. Another all nighter was at our apartment ( Don, Frank, and I ) along with Rich and the Gables gang playing Risk. The good times were many but never enough. Softball, golfing, pulling pranks on one another at The Gables.Life was very good. I am deeply saddened to say goodbye to my pal Mr Moose of Moose & Squirrel fame. Rest well and know you are loved.

August 17, 2020 at 11:09 pmI was saddened to hear of Rich’s passing. I worked for him many years at the Midway Hotel. He was by far the best manager that I have ever had in my nearly 40-year customer service career. He never asked me to do something that he wouldn’t do himself. I remember if we were looking for him in the hotel, the last place we looked for him was in his office. He usually wasn’t there. He would be cooking in the restaurant or doing projects in the hotel. Rich needed that big body of his to hold an even bigger heart. You will be in my thoughts and prayers Mary, Emily, and Bo.

He was truly a “people person” and I will definitely miss him. Rest In Peace Rick – until we meet again.

August 18, 2020 at 12:19 pmI am still in disbelief that Richard “Cherders” has left us!
I started my career in hospitality at Roxy’s and then through Richard’s guidance and encouragement he allowed me to make my way through the BW Midway Front Desk and then eventually into the Sales Office.
Well, 28 years, and several Hotels and General Manager’s later, there are many times when I still catch myself thinking of Richard and his hardworking, but fun, laid back personality that set the tone for everyone working with him. I don’t think any of us realized we were actually working! He loved to joke around with everyone, and he loved to give us all nicknames…. for some reason I became “Loretta”. Beyond the fun, the hard work ethics he exhibited to all of us is also something that I have tried to carry out for myself throughout the years.
Along the way, I also got to work with Mary, Bo (and Emily for a short time) and I was then fortunate enough to form a friendship with all of them that has lasted throughout all of these years.
Mary, Bo (Meagan) and Emily, you know my heart is breaking for you, and you know I love you all!
Heaven definitely has received one big teddy bear of an angel!
I will miss you Cherders!

August 20, 2020 at 11:01 amSo sad to hear that Rich passed. I had the honor of working with him at the Hoffman House/Midway Hotel for years. He was always a hands on manager, and worked along side us to ensure that we all knew what needed to be done. He ran a tight ship, but also made sure that we all had fun doing our jobs while we were there.
I remember when I first started as a line cook that I couldn’t flip an omelet in the pan, and this is the way he expected it to be done. He told me that he knew that I could do it, and watched over me until I flipped my first omelet in the pan. He said, “I told you that you could do it, I knew you could.” I have so many memories of wonderful years working with him.
Mary, you and your family will be in my prayers through this time. Rich will be missed by so many people who’s lives he touched.
