Richard Charles “Dick” Sowton, 80, of Lansing, passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2023. He was born on March 25, 1943, in Cadillac, Michigan. The family moved to nearby Marion, Michigan, where Dick graduated from high school in 1961. In 1966, Dick married Maryon Evelyn Jacobson, his faithful wife of 57 years, and they moved to Lansing, Michigan, where Dick went to work as an electrician for the Lansing Board of Water and Light, retiring in 2006 after a 40-year career.
Dick served proudly as a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, including as a union steward. While living in Lansing, he coached a number of football teams from the Pop Warner level, to high school with Lansing Sexton, where he helped coach his two sons, and with the semi-professional Lansing Crusaders. He greatly enjoyed the many summers spent at a family cottage on Rose Lake. Upon retirement, Dick loved to spend his time cooking, traveling with his wife, and taking his family, especially his grandchildren, on trips to Disney World.
Preceding Dick in death were his parents, Raymond “Bud” and Virginia “Becky” Sowton; his sister Pamela Sowton; and his daughter Lisa Daman (Tim). His survivors include his wife; his sons Tim (Stephanie) and Todd (Nicole) Sowton; and his grandchildren, Jason and Abby Daman, Camile Sowton, and Olivia Sowton and Nylah Garza. Many thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at McLaren of Greater Lansing for their excellent care.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at the Estes Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. His family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Private interment will take place in Cadillac. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Alzheimer’s Association and American Diabetes Association will be greatly appreciated.

I enjoyed working with Dick at BWL’s Eckert Station for a number of years mostly as a union steward. He was always professional, direct, and worked for the greater good.

I missed working with him when I moved on from Eckert.

God bless his soul and his family.

I had the privilege of working with Dick for many years at BWL Eckert Station. Dick was a good man and very passionate in his role as a IBEW representative.

RIP Brother!
Dick was the voice for workers at the Eckert Power Station and beyond. I have many memories of his resilient work to help members be successful at thier craft and was instrumental in improving conditions for his coworkers. He will be missed, but not forgotten.
