Born August 7, 1929, Fowler, MI, died May 20, 2017.  Dick joined the Lansing Police Department in 1953 and put in 43 great years, retiring as a captain in 1995.  Prior to the LPD, Dick served in the U.S. Air Force as a military policeman.  Following the LPD, he worked for 13 years at the Lansing State Journal.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Clemens and Martha, wife Marilyn, son Tim, grandson Mike, brothers Alvin and Kenneth, and brothers-in-law Dick Lucas and Mike Kramer.  He is survived by his son, Terry (Jennette); daughter, Sandy (Kevin) Lovell; grandchildren, Tom, Rich (Molly), and Maria Fox, Tyler and Mitch Lovell; sisters, Ruth Lucas, Janet (Ray) Armbrustmacher, and Kathy Kramer; sister-in-law, Ernestine Fox; brothers, Lee (Susie), George (Theresa), and David (Rose); and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was a member of St. Mary Cathedral Parish.  It was at St. Mary’s where he met his wife, Marilyn Fettig.  They married in 1954 and spent 58 wonderful years together prior to her death in 2012.

Dick was a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA.  He was involved in the Michigan Chapter of the FBI Associates, Volunteers of America – Lansing Chapter, Old Newsboys of Greater Lansing, Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the St. Mary Cathedral Parish Council.  He was a coach and mentor for youth baseball and basketball teams and an avid sports fan of the Spartans, Notre Dame football, and the Detroit Tigers.

Dick and Marilyn spent many happy times at their Pleasant Lake cottage with their family.  He had great memories of family gatherings in Fowler and Petoskey.  Dick immensely enjoyed attending his grandsons’ sporting events.

He told interesting stories of his career with the LPD and had many favorite sayings and quotes, including this one:

“For when the One Great Scorer comes

  To write against your name,

He marks – not that you won or lost –

But how you played the game.”

The quotation was from Grantland Rice, thought by many to be the best sportswriter of his generation.

If we are thought to be six circles of separation to know everyone in the world, Dick knew all the people in the first three circles, most of the fourth and many in the fifth. Forty-two years with the Lansing Police Department will never be seen again.

Dick was a Great Fan of Fowler High School Sports which was his Alma Mater! He would make the drive from Lansing to show his support for our Eagles! I truly appreciate his support especially seeing him in the stands while we were warming up before tipoff! I’m sure you gave you’re brother Coach Fox some great advice before the Big Games! Thank you for all you did for the Fowler Community you will be missed!

My heart is saddened to learn of Dick’s passing. I’ll always have fond and joyful memories of working with him on projects at St. Mary Cathedral. Dick was not only an effective and efficient leader, but also one of the happiest, funniest, nicest and most humble men I’ve ever known. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the family. May you find peace and comfort in the countless ways he touched so many lives and know that your loved one will be deeply missed.
