Peggy J. Higdon
Age 96, passed away peacefully with her children by her side, January 16, 2026. She was born April 1, 1929, in Lansing, MI, daughter of the late Ray and Hazel Downing. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Higdon, and brother Jack Downing, leaving behind two children, a son Randall (Judy) Higdon, daughter Gail (Bill) Kendall, grandchildren Chad (Jennifer) Higdon, Amber Higdon, Brianne (Levi) Herron, Kelie Micho, Alyssa (Scott) Clark and three great grandchildren Zoie Higdon, Kendall Clark and Vahn Herron.
She and her husband were sailors and spent their summers sailing on Lake Michigan.
Peggy was a retired school bus driver from the Waverly School District. Even in her early nineties while grocery shopping there were people who would approach her and tell her that she was their favorite school bus driver.
She was happiest behind a wheel. Peggy loved to drive and enjoyed cars especially the fast and sporty ones.
Peggy was a devoted member of South Church and was always cooking something to assist families in their time of need.
Her husband and family were her delight. She loved to cook and entertain. The holidays were her favorite when friends and family would gather and sometimes someone who she knew would be alone was welcomed.
Her motivation in life was to be there for anyone who needed help. That was her purpose…a true caregiver, the first one in line to do whatever was needed to be done.
Even in her late years she had a sense of humor that endeared her to those who adopted her as a part of their family at the Brookdale Delta Memory Community Center where she last resided.
Her family, friends and caregivers will miss her for she was a beacon of light to everyone.
There will be a funeral service held 12:00 p.m., Thursday, January 22, 2026, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Washtenaw St., Lansing, MI 48933. Visitation will be for one hour prior the funeral on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Optimal Care Hospice

January 19, 2026 at 2:22 pmMrs. Higdon was my school bus driver back in the mid-to-late 1960s when I attended Stoner Elementary in the Waverly School District. She was so nice to everyone that it was hard for any student on the bus to misbehave. Mrs. Higdon demonstrated kindness and compassion to all of her passengers. My condolences to her family on your loss.

January 21, 2026 at 10:56 amBob and Peg were like second parents to me. It was always fun to go there and share stories, Bob saying something about the army and me calling him the “Old Sea Dog’. Peg was one of my sisters bus drivers and Maureen always liked her. Peg would always ask me about Maureen and how she was doing when I came over to get Randy and head out for unknown parts. I will miss her but I bet her and Bob are planning a sailing venture as we speak! Thoughts and prayers to your family.

January 21, 2026 at 11:08 pmBob and Peggy were beloved friends of my parents, Jim and Betty King, for many years. The four of them square danced with a group in the Wavery area for several years, making many wonderful memories. Bob and Peggy invited Judi and I, and our young daughters, to go sailing. When we left the inlet to Lake Michigan, and the jib came loose, it quicky became obvious the Salty Dog had salty word choices! Peggy tried to quiet him but she was laughing so hard her words didn’t have much effect. Our prayers to all.

January 22, 2026 at 6:08 pmDearest Randy and Gail,
I send my deepest condolences to you and your family.
Peggy and Bob were part of our family, Oh the memories..
It is comforting to know they will rest together nearby on the Grand River.
I always remember John calling your mom Piggy. Still makes me laugh.
He was such a little guy..
Sending love and sunshine from California.
