Pastor James Albin Scott Lowman

Pastor James Albin Scott Lowman, age 57, went home to be with the Lord on October 1, 2026. He was born on July 23, 1969, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to his loving parents, James and Cheryl Lowman. Their ministry journey took them to several communities before settling in Holt, Michigan, where Scott graduated from Holt High School in 1988.

Later that summer, the family began attending First Assembly of God in St. Johns, Michigan. It  was there that Scott met the love of his life, Sharleen Layne. They were married on May 25, 1991, and spent the next 35 years living out their dreams together. They were blessed with four children and two grandchildren, who were the joy of Scott’s life.

Scott wore many hats throughout his life — devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, faithful son and brother, proud uncle, delivery driver, pastor, teacher, and loyal friend. He approached each role with dedication, humility, and a heart full of compassion.

He loved competition in all its forms, whether on the racetrack, the ice rink, or the field. Scott enjoyed attending sporting events of every kind, cheering for the home team, the underdog, anyone who drove a Ford, and for any competitor who showed passion and grit.

Scott also cherished God’s creation. He loved being outdoors, walking and hiking nature trails, and spending time on the water. Many of his happiest hours were spent boating and fishing, especially on Lake Michigan.

A lifelong learner, Scott delighted in researching anything and everything — and then sharing what he learned with everyone around him. He had a wonderful sense of adventure and loved taking road trips with Sharleen, exploring new places and enjoying the beauty of God’s creation.

Above all, Scott loved God and loved people. He faithfully pioneered Grace Chapel PCG in St. Johns, Michigan, where he pastored for 16 years, touching countless lives with his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering faith.

Scott is survived by his wife, Sharleen; his children, Tyler, Jake (Melissa), Madelyn, and Seth (Sherri); his grandchildren, Josephine and Harlan; his mother, Cheryl; his brother, Jeremiah (Julie); and his niece and nephew, Haleigh and Charles. He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. James “Jim” Lowman.

Visitation will be held Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 7:00–9:00 p.m. at Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Washtenaw St., Lansing, Michigan. Funeral service will take place Friday, October 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church of God, 2202 Donora St., Lansing, MI 48910, with Bishop Dan Coleman officiating. There will be a luncheon to follow and a graveside service will be held at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Holt, Michigan, following the luncheon, around 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the family’s GoFundMe page at

Never had the pleasure of knowing Pastor James that well but I can tell he was a man of faith, family and character from the way he raised, loved and led his family. And for how amazing his family is. Sharleen was like a second Mom to me. His son Jake is one of my best friends. We have shared many, many loud laughs and moments of hilarity together. I am sure Heaven is echoing with your laughter now as I write this. I will never, ever forget the love, welcomeness and hospitality your family has shown me. Rest in Heaven. Until we meet again James, RIP. – Ryan

Pastor Lowman was gentle and caring. He and Sharleen, as I am sure many can agree, made you feel right at home. I know Sharleen and the rest of the family will carry on his sweet spirit and heart of servitude.

I didn’t know James Lowman at all but I went to collage with Jake his son. And what I know of Jake: his humility, kindness, easy smile, and care for others James must have been a great father.
Love and prayers from the Harmons
