OJ was born August 8, 1934, to Hubert and Ethel (Frick) Scherschligt, in Yankton, South Dakota.  He spent his early years on a family farm, attending elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse.  He entered South Dakota State University on an ROTC scholarship, earning degrees in Horticulture and Landscape Architecture.  It was there that he met his life-long love, Margery Peters, and the two were married in 1955.

OJ began his career with the South Dakota Game, Fish, & Parks Dept., ultimately becoming the State Park Director.  In 1971, he accepted a position with the Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources, serving in several posts, most notably as the Director of State Parks, DNR Deputy Director, and General Manager of the Michigan State Fair.  He was active in many State and National professional organizations and received numerous awards for his conservation and natural resources work.  He retired from public service in 1997.

Additionally, OJ served in the military, on active duty with the US Army following college graduation, and then with the Army National Guard.  He continued his military career in Michigan, serving with the Air National Guard at the Selfridge ANGB, retiring as a Lt. Colonel.

OJ was a loving, devoted husband and father.  He had multiple personal interests and hobbies, many of which he shared with his wife, Margery.  He was a history buff, sports enthusiast, and antique collector, focusing mainly on American art glass.  He was an avid horticulturist and was most happy in later years tending his gardens.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Gerard Catholic Church, 4437 W. Willow Hwy., Lansing, MI on Friday, July 2, 2021, at 10:30 a.m.   Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Delta Township.  The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Scherschligt Family,
Please accept our deepest sympathy and condolences in the loss of OJ. Few knew of our common background from the Great Plains of Pierre and Bismarck, as we assimilated into the society of urban America and the Rust Belt. Growing up in western Minnesota, we shared the great music of WNAX in Yankton, with memories of every polka, waltz and shottish ever performed by Lawrence Welk.
Another common connection was SDSU, as I was offered a full scholarship to play for the Jack Rabbits, fortunately I escaped to play for the Gophers! Thanks for the long term friendship and many mutual contacts through our mutual careers in park and recreation management.
Kindest regards,
John and Pat Greenslit

With deep sorrow I just found out OJ passed. We were high school classmates in Yankton and both involved in school sports then college classmates at South Dakota State, graduating in 1956. He went Army and I, Air Force, both serving our country with honor and distinction. Our condolences to Margery and family over his passing. RIP OJ, you were a great friend, classmate and person.

Margery and family, I am deeply sorry for your loss.

OJ was truly a man’s man of many interests and skills, having a heart of gold, and advocate for the down-trodden. His was a full life well-lived as husband/father, patriot, public servant and Lamb of God. His gifts of courage and vision leave a legacy of protecting our state’s precious natural resources and beauty for future generations to come.

My father was also an avid gardener and he would offer “No place closer to God’s Heart”.

And you were the wind beneath his wings. May he rest in Peace.

To Margi and daughters.
So sad to hear of OJ’s passing. From S Dakota to Lansing he moved with you and your three beautiful daughters to become DNR’s Chief of State Parks. For many years I was his assistant. Orie was a kind, caring, and gentle friend to many. From SD, he brought an unusual insight into solving problem issues, many being extremely complex. He also brought new and exciting ideas to a major agency not all that willing to change. Bless you all. Ginny and I have been living in NC now for over twenty years.

Offering condolences to all the family from The National Imperial Collectors Society. As past president of NIGCS, I am well aware of the many contributions OJ made to our collectors in managing the use of his several molds to our benefit in fundraising. We certainly appreciate his efforts on our behalf, and bemoan the passing of a good friend of Imperial.
