Miriam Winnig

Age 101, passed away September 28, 2023.  She was born October 25, 1921, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, to Abe and Jennie Shafton.  Miriam attended the University of Wisconsin (Madison) and University of Michigan, before receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota.

Upon graduation, she worked for the American Red Cross and then as an Air Traffic Controller, prior to her marriage to Justin Winnig in 1945.

She worked for many years at East Lansing State Bank.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Justin Winnig; her siblings, Bernice Shepard, Morton Shafton, and David Shafton; her daughters, Melody Winnig and Jamie White; and by her son, Arthur Winnig.  Surviving are:  her daughter, Robin (Dan) Hoehler; grandson, Michael Winnig Giuliano; and great-granddaughters, Michaela and Skye.

Miriam’s life was enriched by bi-weekly family zoom visits during the last 3 ½ years with Judy Barnett, Janet Bronitsky, Phil Kaplan, Barbara Kahan, and Larry Shepard, as well as their extended families.

Miriam is also survived by her dear friend, Sue Marrah.

Miriam was a longtime member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek in East Lansing.

Her family is grateful for the care she received at The Willows at Okemos, and for the care she received from Heart to Heart Hospice.

A private burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Lansing.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Red Cross or the charity of their choice.

I feel so blessed to have known Miriam, and often thought about her after I retired.

I prepared her tax returns for many years, and was so impressed with her knowledge. She was my only client that had me go through the tax return line by line. And she’d ask questions. She actually read those fine print statements from her broker.

I enjoyed her company, and remember her fondly.
