Michel Salem Nasif, D.D.S.

Michel Salem Nasif, D.D.S., known to many as “Butch” died March 28, 2022, at the age of 75.  Born May 14, 1946, he was a loving son to the late Machail “Mack” and Catherine (Mahfooz-Coury) Nasif and brother to Rhoda (Nasif) McCall.

Married for 45 years, he was a loving husband to Alice (Goist) Nasif and proud father to Michel C. and Blake S. Nasif.  He was a wonderful “Jedo” to Michel and Rema’s two daughters, Jordan (4) and Mila (2).

Michel was born and raised in Lansing, Michigan and attended JW Sexton High School, and was part of the 1963 Sexton Football State Championship team.  He completed his undergraduate studies at Michigan State University and graduated from The University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1972.  Dr. Nasif retired in 2016 after practicing in the Lansing area for 44 years.  During those years he was an active member of the American Dental Association and the Michigan Dental Association where he also held committee chairmanships.

A lifelong Wolverine in a city of Spartans, he was an avid U of M fan, always cheering on the Maize and Blue while creating friendships and memories throughout his life.  He cherished fishing trips to Canada and traveling far and wide with family and friends.

Michel will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, boisterous personality and compassion for others.  His sincere honesty toward life and his loyalty and love for his family, friends, and profession will not be forgotten.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 8, 2022, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2-4 p.m. (Trisagion service at 3:30) and 6-8 p.m.  The funeral service will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1701 E. Saginaw St., Lansing on Saturday, April 9 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a memorial meal for family and friends and then a private burial.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Michel’s honor to Alzheimer Research, C/O Alzheimer’s Association, 2111 University Park Drive, Ste 200, Okemos, MI 48864, Sparrow Home Hospice, 1210 W. Saginaw St., Lansing, MI 48915.

Alice and family, Please accept our condolences on Butch’s passing! He was a great fellow and a well respected dentist in the Dental community. I remember first meeting him and Dr. DeLuca as they were starting their dental careers when they worked from Dr. William Brooks’s office! I was just starting mine as a dental hygienist! Hugs and many prayers for you all.

Our condolences go out to your family. We have had the privilege of knowing Michel (Butch) all thru high school and thereafter as a friend and family dentist. We are sincerely sorry for your loss. His warm personality was a reflection of what type of person he was. The Class reunions always served as a connector to all the fond memories we continued to have of Butch. He will be sorely missed. God bless.

I’m very sorry to learn of Michel’s passing. It was an honor and a privilege to work with him on his numerous volunteer leadership positions with the Michigan Dental Association. I could count on him for his sage advice, and he would tolerate my reminding him of his MSU roots. He always…always… reminded me that family came first. He made a difference…particularly in the areas of standard of care and ethics and I’m so very grateful for having known him.

At such times as these we are reminded of how precious each relationship we have is. Not only have we lost Michel whom we love but also after 37 years as Dr. Nasif’s employee, I have lost a valued mentor whom I respected deeply. “Always do the right thing and you’ll never have any regrets.” Integrity and ethics were his middle names. Whatever fate brought me to his office, I will be forever grateful and miss him sorely. My deep sympathy to Alice, Michel, Blake, Rhoda and all of his family he loved so dearly. Always “family first.”

Dr Nasif hired me right out of college. I remember him saying that he hired me because I was the one who he felt that wanted the job. I did, and I will always appreciate his acknowledgment of that. I will always remember his undying love for his boys, and his passion for all things U of M. One of the first things he asked me was which team I support. Fortunately I grew up a Michigan fan. I learned so much from him, throughout the years. Most and importantly “family first”. His presence will be sorely missed. My most heartfelt condolences to Alice, Michel and Rema, Blake and Rhoda. I will never forget the day that I walked into the office, as he and Alice were walking out. His face lit up, when he saw me, like I was a long lost friend. I will never forget you. Thank you so much for hiring me.

Who would have ever thought that, with such very heavy hearts we are sending this to you.
You and Butch were among our first friends in Lansing, Frank as an Oral Surgeon, Butch
as his friend, dentist, and golfing buddy. Butch will be sadly missed by all who knew and
loved him. You are in our thoughts and in our prayers. May GOD hold all of you in the palm

Our families crossed paths in many different ways. Neighbors on Opaline. Myself having the opportunity to coach Blake in High School. Later watching him on TV as a Michigan Wolverine football player. After that becoming friends with my own daughter. All of us rooting on Michel as he excelled on the football field and later we also went on his baseball state championship journey. All the encounters were pleasant. Usually involving laughter. But, most definitely filled with smiles. I never saw Alice without a smile on her beautiful face. When I close my eyes and picture the boys it’s the same. A big smile, A sincere smile! You Nasif’s had one common denominator. How ironic that it is your smiles. The Doc was the leader of the pack. The Dentist. In the business of making great smiles. Yet your smiles are much more than cosmetic. There is something behind them. It is happiness. It is genuine. And it is very, very, real. You are all contagious. You make the people around you feel good. You spread happiness. Doc was your family Patriarch and we can still see his great smile. His great sense of humor that we couldn’t wait to hear what he had to say next. We are all saddened by the loss of this great man. We find peace to know there are two more men just like him to carry the torch. And the strongest most caring wife with that million dollar smile. Alice will keep spreading that fantastic Nasif feeling to us all. Until we meet again Dr. Nasif, you keep on smiling. Thanks for the great memories.

He was so kind and had patience when listening to them “pitch” selling cookies. And of course the girls thought he was a great dentist to go to as well, he made the experience fun for them. In the end, is not the memories Butch had, but the memories of those who loved him. What matters is how long he will be remembered, by whom and for what. The life Butch lived didn’t just happen by accident or circumstances, but by choice. Butch lived a life that mattered.
May he rest in peace knowing this.

To the Nasif family~ I was so sorry to learn of Butch’s passing. He was a great friend and a super great dentist. I used to tell him I didn’t like his profession just liked him. And he would laugh at me. We went to the same school, even though he was a year behind me and so I’ve known him for a long, long time. He used to tease me about my love for Notre Dame and we used to laugh about it. He will be missed but I know he is in a better place with no more pain and I am sure he will be trying to convince anybody who will listen to him that there is only one team you should be rooting for is his beloved U of M. RIP and until we meet again Go Blue.

Carolyn and I were very sad to hear of Dr. Nasif’s passing. He was a great man and a great dentist. I first met Dr. Nasif in 1976 when he was the ring side dentist at the Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament in Lansing. A head butt to the jaw introduced me to him and to Dr. Pansino.
Dr. Nasif and I hit it off right away and he continued to be my dentist for the next 40 years until his retirement in 2016. There was never an appointment that I didn’t look forward to feeling that handshake and seeing that true smile. Our sympathy and prayers go out to Alice, the boys and their families.

I know Butch because he was blessed to have married one of my best and long time friends, Alice. And because of the wisdom he showed when choosing Alice for his spouse I was certain to like him. And like him I did. He was engaging, humorous and caring even when spending an evening with Alice and myself caring on about times gone by. He always asked about my 2 boys with sincere interest. And always welcomed me with affection and warmth.
I am unsure as to whether or not Butch was a wine drinker but he always had a superb bottle of red wine whenever I came to visit. I will miss that but most of all I will miss Butch when I go to visit my cherished friend.

Dr Nasif was my first “boss” in Lansing. I commuted from Flint and worked as a dental hygienist 2 1/2,days a week in his office on W.Saginaw for 4 yrs. I learned pretty quickly not to mention the green and white team to him or any of my patients and don’t forget who signs my check! His blood ran blood blue (and maize). He was always kind and caring to me and all of his staff and his entire practice. He was more than a dentist, but a friend to all and showed true care and compassion. .Dr rehired me in 2007 to work one day a week for 10 years. Through those years I found him to be the same as when I left…kind, compassionate and very happy. He never said a negative word. He was an awesome man that I will never forget!
