Matthew “Butch” Rens, Jr.
Holt
Affectionately known as “Butch” by his family and friends, Matthew Rens, age 93, passed away August 21, 2017. He worked for General Motors as a skilled tradesman for 30 years. He was a tremendous friend, father, motorcyclist and boater. He could be seen on many summer days dragging a child behind his “favorite toy” pontoon, his laughter echoing across the water.
Matt was born in Holt, Michigan, January 13, 1924. He was raised on the farm and learned hard work was met with reward. He joined the Army in 1943 and served actively at D-Day, Battle of the Bulge and received two Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged in February of 1946.
Matt was a loving husband to his wife, Joanna, a loyal friend and brother to Charles “Chuck” Rens, and a proud father from a previous marriage to son Owen, daughters Nancy, (Tom), Patti (Bob) and Joy (Don). He was the fun grandfather to Cory, Christina, Chad, Collin, Connor, Cassie and great-grandson Miles. He will also be dearly missed by several nieces and nephews.
Matt was always quick with his wit and a smile. “The 3 Rens boys” were frequently seen at family get-togethers laughing and cutting up with one another. Matt was always at that table!
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 25, 2017, at Grovenburg United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends on Thursday evening at the church from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and at 10:00 a.m. Friday. Interment will take place at Markham Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Capital Area Humane Society. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel.
