Mary Lee Mathews

Age 71, of Lansing, passed away on August 10, 2010. Mary Lee was born January 7, 1939, in Coleman, Michigan. She was the daughter of Leo Tesman and Gladys Mott, who preceded her in death.

She attended Coleman schools and attended Graceland University, Lamoni, Iowa, for one year. She married Murphy Mathews in 1959 and is the mother of Jeff Mathews, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Michelle Mathews of Sherman Oaks, CA. Mary Lee was employed by the Dow Chemical Company in Midland for a number of years before moving to Lansing with her family. She was employed by the State of Michigan for 26 years before her retirement in 2002.

During her children’s younger years Mary Lee volunteered extensively at Lewton Elementary School in Lansing. She particularly enjoyed assisting younger children become acquainted with their computers. Mary Lee was a lifelong member of the Community of Christ Church. She volunteered many hours of service through the years in the areas of Christian Education, either as a Sunday school teacher or as Christian education director. She also served in several administrative areas of the church at various levels.

Mary Lee is survived by her husband, Murphy; children, Jeff and Michelle; her sister, Patricia (Bobby) of Saginaw; and her brother, Richard of Alma. Another sister, Sally Wood, of Vacaville, CA, passed away in January 2010.

A memorial service celebrating Mary Lee’s life will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lansing Community of Christ, 1514 Miller Road (corner of Haag Road), Elders Ken and Carole Dudley will preside. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Detroit Hope Ministry, in care of the local Community of Christ. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.legacy.com.
