Mary Frances Lapka

Age 90, of Lansing, MI, passed away on May 4, 2021. She was born on November 13, 1930 in Lansing to Margaret and Edward McKeone.

Mary married the love of her life, Len Lapka, teacher and coach, and celebrated 65 years of marriage before his death in 2015. She attended Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati and after raising her family, completed her education at Michigan State University, graduating summa cum laude with a Masters in Education. Some of Mary’s most memorable times were spent at the family cottage on Rennie (aka “Lennie”) Lake. She loved having morning coffee on the deck, playing lively card games, painting rocks with grandkids, and loudly cooking elaborate breakfasts for her family. She enjoyed traveling, attending grandchildren’s activities near and far. She joined family vacations in North Carolina, Florida, and New York and enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Europe, Japan and more. Her hobbies included quilting, fishing, and reading. She maintained close friendships with her neighbors and childhood friends, and was known for her thoughtful letters and “Alerts” to loved ones, always signing off with her trademark, “Just Me.”

Mary is survived by her five children: Deborah Boyd, Jean Lapka, Joseph (Cindy) Lapka, Thomas Lapka, and James Lapka; her grandchildren: Jennifer Walker, Joseph Lapka (Gonzalo Manucci), Sara (Michael) Brundage, Tyler Boyd, Katie (Steve) Pahner, Molly (Steve) Shimek, Adam Simons, Dr. Alexander (Brianna) Lapka, Kaitlin Lapka; 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. I was so saddened to read of Mary’s passing. She and I go back a very long way, first as high school freshmen, then as coaches’ wives and moms. My love and condolences to her family. Mary and Len are a big part of my good memories.

My condolences to the Lapka family. Mary was special to all of us who played sports for Len during his days at St. Mary. We were able to keep in touch via reunions and emails during our “adult” years. She will be missed..

Dear Lapka Family,

I knew your mom, because your dad was our favorite teacher and the coach at St. Mary Cathedral. As adults we knew them as part of our “class reunion gang” as they attended as Special Guests, all of our reunions and were welcomed with open arms by our friends and classmates.

We would meet up with them at McNamara’s St. Patrick’s Day dinners, various church events, and First Friday class dinners. It always made our hearts happy to be with them.

Your mom was part of the “prayer warriors” for our class for many, many years. She always let me know she was on the job praying with us, which was really appreciated. What a great lady!

You were blessed with wonderful parents and we thank you for sharing them with so many.

God bless you all.

Love and prayers,

Classmates from
St. Mary Cathedral ’60

I am so sorry to hear about your mother. I had tried to contact her to let her no about my Dad Cliff Hart. I remember many good times and stories when your parents and mine got together, lots of laughs and loud conversations, I can only imagine what will go on when they’re all together again. Again, thoughts and prayers to each and everyone.

Dear Jean and the Lapka Family,
My parents loved and respected your parents so much! They became acquainted at St. Mary’s when my Dad became involved with the football program! I grew up hearing about Len and Mary and then got to know Jean in High School! I felt like I won the lottery getting to know Jean!
Time passes, we move forward and occasionally reconnect with people , but always hold them close in our hearts – that’s how I will always remember your Mom and Dad!
So sorry for your loss and so grateful for your family!

Marcia Stahl knew Mary from her days as Kevin’s teacher at Lewton & through her affiliation with the teachers/coaches at Waverly. Mary & Marcia reconnected at St Gerard over the last five years. Marcia was happy to get reacquainted and sends her condolences to Mary’s family.
I met Mary through our Senior Exercise Class at St Gerard. We will always remember her beautiful smile, soft voice & delightful friendship. On behalf of our exercise group, we send our condolences to Mary’s family. May she see the face of the Lord this day…
