Mary Jane Jakovac

On Monday, August 17th, our beloved mother, Mary Jane (Tisdale) Jakovac completed her earthly journey and was called home. Mom valiantly battled her declining health and bravely faced her mobility issues with a balanced dose of stubbornness and humor. She was our matriarch, our humble, quiet and gracious leader. Mom never let a swear word or drop of alcohol pass her lips, even amid the teasing from her children and siblings. She was the epitome of a devoted Mother and Grandmother and our home on Marshall Street was our refuge from all of life’s challenges that included not only our teenage years but everything that came after. A place to gather for holidays, birthdays, or just a home cooked meal on Sunday. Her listening ear and constant and enduring presence kept us grounded and headed in the right direction. We were blessed with unconditional love and we thank God for our time with our mother.

Mom was born on January 20, 1939 in Ottumwa, Iowa and grew up in Lansing, MI. She was enrolled in the Lansing public school system and played the clarinet in her middle school band. She attended Lansing Eastern High School where she graduated in 1957. She was the first-born child to Cecil and Jane Ann (Singrin) Tisdale and eldest sister to her three siblings, whom she loved dearly.

Mom was preceded in death by her parents, and several beloved family members: Dr. James Puckett, Keith Raymond, Tom Jakovac, Kim Watters, step-mother Dorothy Tisdale, and our father, William I. Jakovac.

She is survived by her six children: Jane (Paul) Carl, Chris Allen (Darrell), Pico (Mike) Ball, Traci (Tom) Shepard, Bill (Tina) Jakovac, and Marie (Michael) Armstrong.

Grandma J also leaves behind her heart in the form of her grandchildren: Zach Norman, Guine Christian, Tyler, Travis and Tony Allen, Anna and Nicholas Ball, Bailey and Corey Shepard, Jordan and Riley Jakovac, and Isaiah, Mia and Elise Armstrong.

Also mourning her passing are her siblings, Barb Puckett, Terry (Gwen) Tisdale and Sally (Del) Robinson. In addition, she is survived by cherished family members: Rosemarie Raymond, Joann and Pete Jacobs, Nancy and Doug Watters, Bonnie and Paul Armbrustmacher, and Mary Ellen Jakovac.

MJ was a full time Mom by day (i.e. chauffeur, teacher, laundress, mechanic, plumber, seamstress, physician assistant, etc.) but spent many years working in the evenings for MSUFCU when it first began in a tiny Quonset hut on MSU’s campus. She also enjoyed being an Avon lady and our house was a fragrant tapestry of sweet honesty and topaz. Once the house was empty and all the kids had graduated from college, Mom began full time employment at Sparrow Hospital/St. Lawrence. She spent many years with the Medical Records Department and it was there that she met her dear friend Norma Snider. They worked together and developed a special bond based on their shared love of family and egg drop soup that continued beyond retirement. Norma strengthened Mom’s walk of faith with the Catholic Church and we are eternally grateful for their friendship.

The Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, August 25th at 2:00 p.m. at Church of the Resurrection, 1505 E. Michigan Avenue, Lansing, Michigan. Visitation will be held in the church an hour before the service from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Arrangements are being provided by Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

If you so choose, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan or Church of the Resurrection, Lansing, MI.

We want to thank her caretakers over the last few years at both Burcham Hills and the Willows at East Lansing, where some became extended members of her family and she cared for them deeply.

We love you Mom and miss you! Thank you for your commitment and devotion to our family. Your love lives on in each one of us and we look forward to being reunited in heaven.

I’m sad for each and everyone of you Jakovac kids, spouses and grandkids. You were all so close with your mom and grandmother, and enjoyed so many wonderful memories (trips to PA) and especially holiday traditions (frosting cookies). It always warmed her heart. My faith tells me she was ready and is in a better place now. Love to you all!

So many great Marshall Street memories. If you wanted to know what was going on in the neighborhood, you only need to ask Mary Jane. Who knew when I used to hang out at your house as a kid, that we would one day work together at Sparrow? My heart goes out to the entire Jakovac family. Rest in Heaven, Mary Jane. You have earned it.

In a generation where people turn up their noses at having children, let alone raising a large family, I have the sharp contrast of the example of your life, Grandma. The accomplishment of raising 6 incredible human beings and nurturing 14 grandkids is a life’s work I hold in more esteem than any other “career” you might have had. The road you travelled was not easy but you brought so much life into the world and you sustained it with us all with so much love.
There aren’t enough words to thank you for the family you shaped and the encouragement that you never ceased to give to me. I could never express the depth of my gratitude for the hundreds of happy memories you have given me, but I am nonetheless also grateful that you are no longer in pain. I will keep you in my heart until we are reunited in heaven.
I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck. Rest in peace, Gram.

I have missed my long-time friend and neighbor ever since she left Marshall St., even more since she has joined the Lord. I love every Jakovac and treasure the memories of our families growing up together. We had many laughs, a few tears and no dull moments raising all those children across the street from each other. Rest In Peace, dear friend. My love and condolences to all of you and may God’s peace be with you.

I’m so sorry to hear of your mothers passing. I remember many fun times in that house and you are right it was always full of love and warmth. Traci, at least it’s nice to know that it wasn’t your mom that found our bottle of vodka that time we stashed it. LOL. I remember we thought we were going to get in so much trouble when that came up missing. Must’ve been Bill, ha ha. Love all you Jakovac kids, thinking of you all. I’m so sorry for your loss, she was a wonderful momma!!

Unconditional love. The words were synchronous with my dear sweet Aunt Mary. It is what was felt every time you were in her presence. I am heartbroken not only because she is gone, but also because of covid-19, I cannot be there to hug my wonderful cousins and their beautiful families. I send my love and prayers to you all. I will miss and love you forever Aunt Minnie HaHa.

My love and prayers are with each of you as we say goodbye to your mom, grandmother.
I will deeply miss my dear friend of over 60 years.
It is rare to have a friend so dear that despite absences, each encounter immediately picks up with the deep love and understanding for each other that we last left with.
I will always love and treasure my friend, Mary Jane.
If it’s true that we select our parents before we are born, you each did a great job. You are the reason she lived.
God Bless you and all that touched her well lived life.

I’ll never forget walking into Mary Janes room and always being greeted with a smile and a hug. You could always have a seat in her chair and chat for as long as you’d like. I remember when she first arrived and all the family piled in her room to make her feel comfortable and settled. Your family and their love for one another is like no other. You were all such great advocates for her health and safety. I am so grateful to have felt even the smallest amount of MJ’s love and will always cherish my time with her.
May you all find peace soon.
