Martha J. Muth
Age 78 of East Lansing passed away March 6, 2026, in Lansing. She was born January 12, 1948, in Columbus, Ohio to the late Joseph and Pauline (Rickly) Schwartz.
Martha spent her early years with her large, loving family in Columbus, Ohio. She moved to Michigan to marry the late Thomas Muth, a professor of telecommunications, and start their family. Martha joined Thomas to work within the MSU community for over 30 years, with administrative positions in the Departments of Human Medicine and Social Sciences. In her free time Martha was an avid quilter, loved to travel, play mahjong and euchre, and was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
She is survived by her children Katherine (Tyler Spencer) Muth and Thomas (Ellen) Muth, Jr.; grandchildren Ramona Spencer, Tabitha Spencer, Elise Muth and Cecilia Muth; siblings Judith (John) Ryan, Susan (Jack) Saeger, Nancy (Pat) Clifford, Barbara (Tim) Morgan, John (Martha) Schwartz and Richard Schwartz; sister-in-law Denise Schwartz; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Thomas Muth, Sr., siblings Joseph Schwartz and Jerome Schwartz.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Riley O’Shea at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 955 Alton Rd., East Lansing, MI. Her family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Lansing Stoneleigh Residence.
Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

March 8, 2026 at 8:21 pmI am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs. Muth as a teenager I was a neighbor and babysitter for the Muth family when the lived in the Forest Road area of Lansing. Great people to work for!! My prayers are with her family and friends during this difficult time.

We would often talk in the hallways and share stories. I knew Tom from my work prior to coming to the University, at Linn’s Camera Shop. Mary, knew her stuff and was alway fun to be around. She will be missed.
