Marjorie Lee Melville
Just nine days shy of her 94th birthday, Marjorie “Margie” Lee Elsie Melville passed away peacefully on July 5th, 2023 at the Hospice of Lansing Stoneleigh Residence. The world was brighter and filled with extra sass after she was born July 14th, 1929 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania to Clifford and Geraldine Mee. Margie grew up with two sisters (Vivian Murphy and Myrna Hopkins) and a brother (Clifford Mee) and graduated from Haslett High School in 1947.
When Margie was just ten years old, her fun-loving and charming personality helped her kick start her singing career where she joined her father in singing at numerous private events. She then went on to study for a short time at Michigan State University. Margie was married to the love of her life, Douglas Melville, for 62 loving years until his passing in 2012. After working for the State of Michigan for two years, Margie dedicated herself to raising her four wonderful children: Kirk (Deborah) Melville, Sherrie (John) Baldwin, David (Sheri) Melville, and Cynthia Bierwagen. Throughout her life, Margie was a beloved “room mother,” Girl Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and proud member of Plymouth Congregational Church. Margie was an avid gardener and loved to flower arrange. Since 1971, she was a member of the Greater Lansing Garden Club where she served as President and received many awards for her design work.
Margie’s happy place was spending time with her family and friends at her family cottage in Glen Arbor. She enjoyed sitting on the deck where she sipped her coffee (which lasted her almost the entire day) overlooking beautiful Big Fisher Lake and the fun it brought her loved ones. In her earlier years, she enjoyed golfing and eventually traveling the country with her husband to visit friends. As a former MSU student, Margie spent a lot of time cheering on the Spartans that then translated into watching many other sporting events such as golf, basketball, football, and hockey.
Margie will always be remembered for her zest for life, contagious sense of humor, love of a good time, strong spirit and exterior, unwillingness to take any flack, her love of family, and encouragement to stay close. She will be remembered in all her roles…an ever-present mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and faithful friend. No matter if it was at church, while visiting with her grandchildren’s friends, or walking through the grocery store, she made a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Left to cherish Margie’s memory are her four children and their spouses, grandchildren: Andra (Lucas) Schrauben, Shana (Joseph) Kaiser, Matthew Bierwagen, Evan Melville, Brandt (Nicolette) Chapman, Jacob Melville, Derek Bierwagen, Lynzie (Tony) Kuchar, Lukas Melville, and great-grandchildren Blake & Lyla Schrauben. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation for everyone at Hospice of Lansing Stoneleigh Residence as well as Sharon Patton and Marci Brown for their ongoing support in Margie’s final years.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 10th, 2023 at 12:30 p.m. at The English Inn, 677 S. Michigan Rd., Eaton Rapids, MI 48827. Bring your memories and stories to share!

July 9, 2023 at 8:59 amI know how difficult this must be for the entire Melville family. Our parents passing are the memories and keepers of our entire life, from the beginning. No good words to share except it hurts to lose our parents, and it sucks. It just sucks.
The Melville family on Arlington Rd. was such an integral part of the Crowl familys’ life growing up. Such a great place to have a childhood.
Aunt Marge and Uncle Doug were wonderful role models. Mary Lou and Marge had a friendship that covered years. I remember they both would be up late at night, doing housework, ironing clothes, and watching ‘The Late Night Show with Johnny Carson’. They would call back and forth on the telephone (NOT CELL PHONES) laughing and talking about what they had seen on the show.
I also remember the day President Kennedy was killed. I was home from school, sick. Mom (Mary Lou) was talking on the phone to Marge. They were both crying about the terrible event.
I remember going with the Melville family on summer trips around Michigan. One in particular to the Kellogg factory in Battle Creek. Trips to Lake Michigan. How Marge and Mary Lou wrangled 10 kids between them! And, growing up, one of them was always pregnant for that span of time from the mid 50’s to the late 60’s. Producing Baby Boomers!
I also remember a picture of Mom and Aunt Marge, in bathing suits, standing together in a lake somewhere in Michigan, arms around each other.
Many, many heartfelt condolences to the family and extended family.
Good, good memories.

July 14, 2023 at 5:12 pmMy deepest condolences to teach of the Melville Children and Grandchildren on the passing of your beloved Mother and Grandmother.
Sharing my high school years with Sherrie meant having the joy of experiencing the energy, humor and love that Marjorie poured out to her family…and oh, that laugh of hers! For all the carpooling to games when we cheered, to the parties at their home for graduation and birthdays, to the just “stopping over” at the house, Marjorie was devoted to the well-being of her family.
May you all find deep comfort in her long and well-lived life, your stories created together, and that she is at peace with her Lord.

July 15, 2023 at 2:57 pmI remember joining garden club in 1972 and how much fun Margie was! She made meetings so enjoyable with much laughter. I am sure that St. Peter welcomed her with open arms, happy that such a great gardener was joining the team.

August 12, 2023 at 3:30 pmWhat a lovely picture of my cousin Margie. It has been many years since we visited but what wonderful memories of family. As a child on our trip to Michigan I would get the privilege of visiting the Melville family. I can still hear Margie and that cute laugh and Doug with his strong, deep voice. My sympathy in your loss but what great roots.

September 12, 2024 at 6:48 pmI have had her heavy on my mind lately. She meant a whole lot to me. Thank you for acknowledging my work with her as well. I miss her something fierce. I will hold onto her for a long time in my memories. I have some pretty funny pictures of her. My favorite memory is coming over around Halloween and she had a different costume on every time but the first one was her wearing a bunny rabbit nose and ears. I laughed so hard I cried. She always knew how to make me laugh and she always had the right words to say.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful woman with me and considering me when she passed away. She was a big part of my life
