Margretta “Margie” Gifford

Margretta D. “Margie” Gifford passed away on May 29, 2023.  She was born to the late Arland and Evelyn Gifford on June 21, 1964, in Lansing, Michigan.

Margie was a special blessing, to her family and everyone who knew her. A true gift from God, she taught us so much about empathy, compassion, tolerance and unconditional love. Margie was diagnosed with Autism in the 1970’s, when little was known about the condition.  Margie had developed quite normally until approximately 3 years old, in both speech and manner.

Margie loved music. Her favorites were songs from the 70’s and show tunes. The soundtrack from the movie “Oliver” was a lifelong favorite. She especially loved listening to music while going for rides in the car. She also had a passion for swimming, sunning and eating. She especially enjoyed Tang, that orange powdered drink the astronauts took to the moon.

Margie is survived by sisters Eileen Kleuckling (Gaylord), Pam O’Brien (Mike), Bonnie Robinson (Ted), brother Arland Gifford Jr (Saundra Wennhold), many nieces and nephews, as well as her loving caregivers, both current and former. Margie has had so many amazing people in her life. Although Margie did not use words, she communicated and made friends easily. She was loved by everyone who knew her.

A memorial gathering will take place at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Saturday, July 8, 2023, from 1:00-4:00 pm.  Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm, followed by a service at 2:00 pm.  Inurnment will take place at Pleasant Plains Cemetery in Baldwin, Michigan at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margie’s name to Autism Support of Michigan, or to Gift of Life of Michigan.

To the Gifford Family: i fondly remember Margie. My senior year of high school I worked at Lincoln Center and came to Margies home and worked with her. I truly enjoyed my time with her. She was a sweet, loving girl. May your cherished memories of Margie bring you comfort and may knowing that she is in God’s loving embrace give you peace.
