Age 88, passed away March 22, 2013. She was born in Lansing on April 21, 1924, to Lester and Bessie Phillips. She attended Lansing Public Schools, graduating in 1942. Mabel held several different jobs, including working as a welder at Fisher Body during World War II. She enjoyed square dancing as a member of the “Merry Mixers,” and later was a member of the Red Hat Club in Dimondale.
Surviving are: grandson, Scott VanDerzee of Lansing; sister, Helen Kerekes of Ludington; brother, Richard (Beverly) Phillips of Mason; several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 40 years, Ferris “Benny” Benedict; son, Lindall “Butch” Benedict; brothers Harry and Floyd Phillips; sisters, Frances McKenzie, Doris Lycos, Jane Edington and Shirley Martens.
The funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon, Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with interment to follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Lung Association in memory of Mabel A. Pittman.
