Our smart, beautiful and steadfast mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mary Elaine Scovill, journeyed home to eternal rest with the Lord on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at the age of 95.
Elaine was born in 1930, to the late Warren and Esther Dobson in Quincy, Michigan. She graduated from Lansing Eastern High School in 1948. She graduated from Michigan State University in 1952, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology. Elaine met a charming fellow by the name of Russel Scovill at a church picnic. The two were married in 1951, at North Presbyterian Church and enjoyed 67 years together. They would become longtime members of Warren Avenue Presbyterian Church in Saginaw. After moving to East Lansing in 1975, they joined First Presbyterian Church.
Elaine and Russel established roots in Saginaw, where they raised four children she adored: Roger, Douglas, Kenneth and Jenny. Elaine spent her days doting on her children and preparing them for life. She enjoyed caring for her garden. Having relatives who farmed, she had a green thumb and learned to can and preserve foods. Her love of horses started as a teenager. She owned a horse and was a proficient rider. That love continued as she attended various horse shows over the years. She was a well-learned baker, passing on family recipes that have lasted generations. Throughout her life, she enjoyed playing bridge with friends. In her later years, spending time with her family, soaking in the smiles and laughter, was the best place she could be.
Elaine is survived by sons, Roger Scovill and Douglas (Pam) Scovill, six grandchildren, Cara Scovill, Bethany Scovill, Joshua Adams, Greg Scovill, Katlyn (Rylan) Hanson, and Trey (Emily) Scovill, and five great-grandchildren, Asher Neville, Olivia, Raegen, Evan, and Ashley Hanson; daughter-in-law, Amy Scovill and brother-in-law, Tom Hawkey. Also surviving her is her dear friend and caregiver, Bonnie Stalnaker.
She was preceded in death by husband Russel, son Kenneth, daughter Jenny and daughter-in-law Shirlee Scovill.
Services will take place at First Presbyterian Church of Lansing, 510 W. Ottawa Street on Friday, March 6, 2026. Visiting will be at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, and also from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Friday. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to her church. The family would like to extend a special thanks to McLaren Hospice for their kind and loving care in her last few days.
