Lynn S. McCurdy, D.O., Col. USAF (ret.)

Early Sunday morning 22 OCT 2023, my wife, life partner, and best friend died peacefully with me at her side. She had long-suffered from an auto-immune disorder of the liver and had hoped to be cured by a liver transplant. But this unrelenting disease process robbed her of the strength necessary to survive that surgery and made it obvious she could not go on.

Lynn was born in 1954, in Ferndale, Michigan, to Glenn and Margaret (Huegel) Herrington.  She graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Nursing. She played trombone in the MSU Marching Band and lettered as a distance runner for the Women’s Track Team. Additionally, she was a member of the Air Force ROTC and after graduation, served active duty as a nurse with assignments in Illinois and Turkey.

She left the Air Force to complete her Doctor of Osteopathy degree from MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. She accepted an internship position at Lansing General Hospital, finishing in 1991. It was during her internship that she met Thom, then an Ob/Gyn resident at the LGH. During their courtship, Lynn convinced Thom that he, too, should serve in the Air Force and when she was accepted into an Air Force residency position in Radiology, Thom was commissioned in the Air Force Reserves. They were married in August 1991.

Their two children, Caerllyn and Shannon were born in Lansing during Lynn’s residency.

Lynn (and Thom) began active-duty service in 1995 where they served both stateside and at Spangdahlem AB, Germany. It was during the 4-year assignment to Germany that Lynn received her promotion to Colonel. She retired from active duty after 23 years of service in 2008, spending her final two years at the Air Force Academy in Colorado, Springs.

Upon leaving the Air Force, she worked at North Ottawa Community Hospital in Grand Haven, MI from 2008-2014. From 2014 until her retirement in 2023, she worked as a contractor radiologist, initially with vRad, a teleradiology service and then with Capital Internal Medicine Associates in Lansing.

Lynn enjoyed gardening, cooking, watching the Food Network while exercising, reading, researching the genealogy of both the Herrington and McCurdy families, organizing family trips each year to Caribbean islands, and most recently, singing in the choir at University Lutheran Church.

Surviving are:  her husband of 32 years, Thom McCurdy; daughters, Caerllyn McCurdy and Shannon McCurdy; her mother, Margaret (Herrington) Edwards; brother, Jim (Lory) Herrington; sister, Sandra (Dan Brashear) Herrington, M.D.; aunt, Iris (Huegel) Cattel; and cousins, nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by:  her father, Glenn Herrington; and brothers, Rick Herrington, and John Herrington.

A memorial service will be held at 1030 on Saturday, 18 November 2023 at University Lutheran Church, 1020 S. Harrison Rd., East Lansing.  Thom will be available from 0900-1000 to greet guests. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society in memory of Lynn S. McCurdy. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel.

I met Shannon, Thom and Lynn’s daughter, when the McCurdy family lived in Colorado Springs. Shannon became my best friend and we stayed in touch after they moved to Michigan. Thanks to Thom and Lynn’s generosity, I was able to visit Shannon in Michigan frequently. Lynn was always so warm, welcoming, understanding, and kind towards me while Shannon and I grew up together. I know firsthand what a wonderful mother she was to Shannon and Caerllyn. Thom and Lynn, thank you for being so giving and allowing me to make some of my life’s best memories in your home with your family. We miss you.

In my sophomore year of high school I befriended Shannon and soon met her family. Over the years I enjoyed getting to know Lynn and Thom. I loved attending family dinners and accompanying them on road trips. I quickly grew to love Lynn’s cooking (especially her
spritz cookies!). My favorite memory of Lynn is when Shannon and I played a game of Catan with her late at night. We had so much fun even though she mercilessly beat both of us. My heart hurts and words can’t express how sorry I am for your loss. Sending all my love.

Dearest Thom and family

Thom I’m sorry I missed you this morning but know I continue to pray for you and your family.

Lynn’s display is lovely. Driving over, the bright sun reminded me of how amazing it must be for her to be face to face with our Lord.

Death is hard and I am so thankful that our Lord can hold Lynn and your family in loving care at the same time. We love you Thom. Rev. Versey Williams and. The Lansing Branch of the NAACP.

In high school, Lynn was part of a group of friends, three gals, Karen, Trudy and Lynn, all brainiacs!! And three fellas, Greg, Norm and myself…goof offs all. No dating, just great friends! While it’s horribly sad to hear of her passing, the bio here is simply golden, just like Lynn

As William Kampsen stated, Lynn was an integral part of our shared history during a very important time of our lives. Her group of girlfriends were adventuresome and funny, and included myself, Norm McKee, and Bill Kampsen in their adventures. She was understated, extremely intelligent, and one of those few people in the world who, just by their nature, give much more than they receive. I recently lost my good wife, and so Thom’s words ring clear to me. Rest in peace, Lynn.

Thom and Family,

Thom, you have shared stories (on bench and locker) that always included a sense of the care and the warmth shared in your home.

The sharing showed the care which you deliver with all around you and this certainly is a testimony to your family and Lynn.

Although we may have never met Lynn, we met her through the way you have always carried her forward in our conversations. Your bond was remarkable for all hearing about you two.

We will pray for your support and guidance.
