Loraine R. Metzger

Loraine was born the 6th of 8 children – Augie, Anna, John, Mary, Wilma, Kay, and Frank – to John and Mary Metzger in Lansing MI, on June 16, 1932.  She was the last of her immediate family to leave us.

Loraine was a proud J. W. Sexton graduate and worked for Michigan Bell until her retirement. After retiring she volunteered with Michigan Bell’s retiree group, the Pioneers.  She wrote cards and notes, ran the Pioneer Museum in downtown Lansing until it closed and helped with their holiday dinners.

Loraine was a part of Lansing Central United Methodist Church where she volunteered at the front desk and was an active part of the Hospitality Ministry there. She also volunteered at Sparrow’s St. Lawrence campus for many years at the front desk.  Loraine loved people.  In her 80’s, after 30 years of “retirement”, Loraine returned to the work force at McDonald’s Okemos Grand River location as a hostess/greeter, where she remained until October of 2019.

Loraine liked her sports – to the point where she honestly believed she could do a better job running the team than the coaches – just ask her.  She loved her Tigers, Lugnuts, Spartans and was a long-suffering Lions fan.  She loved to travel, taking trips to New Zealand, New Jersey, and Guam to visit her brothers.  In her later years she loved day trips to Frankenmuth and outings with the Day Trippers travel group at Lansing Central United Methodist Church.

Family meant everything to Loraine.  She leaves a sister-in-love, cousins, nieces, nephews, and the many people she counted as family.  We want to thank her nephew Ken for providing her with loving care in her last months.

There will be a memorial service held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 30, 2021, at the Central United Methodist Church, 215 N. Capitol Ave., Lansing, 48933 with visitation one hour prior to the service, masks are required for those attending. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Lansing Central United Methodist Church, for their Hospitality Ministry. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

My husband worked with Loraine for years at Michigan Bell. We were so happy when we met up with her again at McDonalds in Okemos. We had a group of retirees that met up on Tuesdays and Thursday. She knew us all by name and we loved her dearly. We missed her when she had to leave McDonald’s. She also was so important to our grandkids they couldn’t wait to get their hugs whenever she was working. Thank you Loraine for touching so many people’s hearts. You were a sparkle that will be missed.

I met Loraine at McDonalds in Okemos. I never actually knew her name, but she was always very sweet and very friendly. At one point, I would always look for her when I went in. I interacted with her a dozen or so times and appreciated her friendliness, positive attitude and gentle demeanor. Safe travels, Loraine, you brightened the world of a stranger and there’s no greater compliment than that!

I know my name may not be familiar, but I am the daughter of the late Roy H Heil. My father worked with Loraine many years at Michigan Bell and was in frequent contact with her after retirement through the Pioneers. She always stayed in touch with him, whether it was a phone call, a visit when he was sick, or a card. She ran an extensive phone tree to keep everyone of the retirees up to date on events and how others were doing. She always brought a smile to his face. She had a huge positive impact on so many. (As evidenced by the fact that I knew her and remembered her all these years and my father passed in 1998). Thank you for sharing her with so many! I hope that these memories bring a smile to you also.
