Leo L. Kosloski

Leo L. Kosloski, age 85, of Lansing, MI passed away on September 12, 2018.

Leo was born February 20, 1933 in Alpena, MI, to parents Bill and Olga Kosloski. Leo grew up in Lansing, MI, and was a U.S. Army Veteran.

Leo is survived by his wife, Caroline; sons Dave and Todd (Florence); grandchildren Kody, Karlee, Josh (Meredith) and Trevor; siblings Betty, Arnie, Jackie, Ken, Steve, Wayne and Carolyn; many uncles, aunts, cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews; and countless friends. He was preceded in death by son Kurt; brothers Ronald, Bernie, brother-in-law Harold Dailey and twin brother, Lou.

Born in Alpena, Michigan, Leo’s home for most of his life was in Lansing, a city he loved. After a 2-year stint in the Army (with his twin brother, Lou) he returned to his hometown to start his thirty-eight year career at Oldsmobile.  Beginning in the paint department, he eventually worked his way up to the Experimental Engineering division until his retirement in 1989.  One of his lasting legacies was providing a bike each month, anonymously, to a deserving child in the Lansing area starting in the late 1980s.  After a year, his coworkers became aware and started the “Leo L. Kosloski Bike Fund” which continued to provide bicycles for underprivileged children in metropolitan Lansing even after he retired from General Motors.

In 1957, Leo married the love of his life, Caroline McManus.  Thus began their 62-year love affair which produced three sons (Dave in 1958, Todd in 1960 and Kurt in 1963).  Sadly, the devastating loss of his youngest son, Kurt, in 2009 was a pain he suffered for the rest of his days.

One of the many joys of Leo’s life was the time he spent at his lake house on Round Lake in Mecosta, Michigan.  He was in his element when surrounded by his large extended family, especially when they attended the large gatherings he hosted for many years on the lake.

In his last year, Leo and Caroline made the decision to move back to Holt, Michigan, to be closer to family and friends.  He was truly happy to be back “home.”  To know Leo is to know how much he loved company, drinking a beer on his new deck, watching “Molly B” on the RFD channel and cursing at the Detroit Tigers.  He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Holt with the Rev. Kirk R. Miller officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Holt.  The family requests casual attire as Leo hated suits!

Uncle Leo, my God Father, you will be dearly missed. To you, and Aunt Caroline, we will hold special memories in our hearts forever and ever. All of the fun times up north at your cottage, the memorial weekends, the cookouts, the kickball games, fishing, pontoon rides, the island, tractor rides for the kids and endless campfires. Sincere condolences to the family. Was a special man, as reflected in his son, Dave, whom I’ve worked with for almost 20 years. Prayers for all as you celebrate his life.

Leo, you are so dearly missed by all. You gave us kids such wonderful memories growing up, which we will forever be grateful for. I am so happy that we were able to spend the last few months with you in Holt, surrounded by family. My heart finds comfort in knowing that Jesus has his arms wrapped around you.

My condolence to the family of the loss of your brother Leo (a fine man). Now Leo Louie and Bernie can have a few beers and talk sports.

Memorial Day weekends at your cottage will always be remembered. The cookouts, the card games (smear), and especially the kids kickball game are wonderful memories. That was always followed by fireworks in downtown Mecosta. We either had a camper in the park up the road or campers and tents were brought into your yard. I am sure I speak for most of the family when I say “those were the good old days.”

Leo you will always be loved and remembered. RIP.

Love,
Ken & Connie

For 35 years we had the pleasure of being a neighbor at the lake to this amazing, gentle man and Caroline. He was always there to help if needed, and was “Grandpa” to my girls, cheering for them at sporting events and handing out endless suckers when they came to visit. We will miss you, Leo…until we meet again.
