Lawrence H. Birch

Age 89, of Mason, MI, passed away February 18, 2019. Larry was born September 9, 1929, in Coldwater, MI, to Herbert and Beatrice Birch. He was raised in Detroit where he attended high school and competed on the swim and track teams. At one time he was the city pole vault record holder. Larry proudly served his country as a member of the National Guard and the citizens of Michigan as a member of the Michigan State Police.

He began his career with Michigan State Police in 1955 as a trooper at the Flint post and was later transferred to the Jonesville post. He was promoted to Detective Sergeant and served in the Auto Theft and Organized Crime Unit in East Lansing. Larry was dispatched to Detroit during the 1967 riots. He retired in 1983 as a 1st Lieutenant after 28 years of service. Larry was considered the leading authority on auto theft and organized crime and was called upon to teach numerous police departments around the county.

Larry instilled the concept of duty to defend and protect those who could not do that for themselves, for whatever reason. He was a man of compassion, reason and humility.

In his spare time, he could be found with family and friends at the VFW or Sammy’s Lounge. He was also a diehard Detroit Lions fan, enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Barbara Ann; 3 children, 4 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-granddaughter, and 2 sisters.
