Kris J. Keeler

Kris Jay Keeler passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 9, 2020 at the age of 68.  Born Sept. 24, 1952 in Lansing to Marshall “Jake” Keeler and Pauline M. Keeler. He graduated from Eastern High School in 1970 and proceeded to get his Journeyman Plumber license passing his test on his first attempt.

Kris and his wife Clara owned Jake’s New & Used Plumbing in Lansing.  He worked alongside his dad, “Jake” since the age of 15 and took over the business in 1999 when “Jake” passed away. He was very well known for all the unique and hard to find old plumbing fixtures he had.  He was a licensed Journeyman Plumber, but his knowledge far surpassed a Journeyman level.  He helped so many people even when he was tired, and it was past closing time.  He knew so many plumbers and a lot of them would come to him for advice.  He was always especially kind and patient with the elderly, often taking extra time just to solve the simplest problem for them.

He is survived by his wife of over 10 years, Clara, stepdaughter Lisa (Shawn) Vansteeland and his step grandchildren Faith and Emily. Also, his brother and sister-in-law, John (Pam) Gray, sister Paula and nephews and nieces.

He enjoyed being a stepdad and grandpa.  Even more since he never had children of his own.  He loved having them around and loved spoiling them. They meant the world to him.

He was a man of integrity and loyalty.  He always said a handshake was as good as his word.  He was a very loyal friend as many of his friends would tell you. He worked very hard for over 50 years but always enjoyed a good time with his friends and family.  He was happiest taking his boat out on Lake Michigan fishing for salmon. Sadly, his bad back no longer would allow him to do something he loved.

Kris and I had so many wonderful times together, even if it was such a short time. He loved going up north to our cabin and just relaxing. Together we enjoyed numerous trips to Las Vegas, Chicago and Indianapolis to see NASCAR and NHRA races.

Kris, you were such a good husband and you told me you loved me every day. Until we meet again, darling, I take comfort in the fact that you were a man of God, and you are finally out of pain and at peace.  I know your loved ones will be waiting for you on the other side along with little Nikki!

I will always love you. Rest in peace, Kris.  You sure have earned it.

Kris was preceded in death by his parents and sister Patricia (Jack) Dowell and his beloved little dog, Nikki.

You will be missed by so many family and friends.

Due to the current COVID restrictions, private services are being held.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date when we can all be together safely. Memorial donations in Kris’ name can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Capital Area Humane Society. Memories and condolences can be submitted to Estes Leadley’s website as a tribute to Kris.

Kris was one of the best friends I’ve ever had or ever will have. We shared a lot of laughs and tears over our long friendship, and his loyalty was unparalleled. Rest easy, Plumber Man, you’ll be missed terribly.

I grew up next door to Kris in the Groesbeck neighborhood. He was always a nice guy, very helpful – especially after my dad got sick.

We were neighbors of Kris’ for many years. I can’t remember all the many times he solved plumbing problems for us. He was really appreciated and highly valued.

We would like to offer our condolences. While we may not have known each other too well, but we sure shared a lot in common in the hardware business. We have always been happy to send our customers to Jake’s Plumbing knowing that they would be well taken care of. God Bless.
