Ken VerBurg

Born February 13, 1933 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Cornelius and Lucy (Van Houten), Ken VerBurg died February 21, 2015. Ken graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School, Calvin College, and Michigan State University. He spent two years in the Army stationed in Germany, where he wrote for the base newspaper. Ken was a long-time professor at MSU, consultant, and published author in the area of state and local government. He will be remembered for his devoted love as a husband, father, and grandfather, brother, and friend.
Ken is survived by Esther, his wife of 59 years; their sons Ken (Molly Powers) of California, Craig (Amy) of Grand Rapids, and Jeff (Jen) of Grand Rapids; and daughters Marilou (Joe) Erb of Hanover, Pennsylvania, and Rachel (Andy) Smydra of Rochester. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, two sisters Cora Huizenga and Joyce Huizenga (Jerry), and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
A memorial service will be held at River Terrace Church, 1509 River Terrace Dr., East Lansing, MI 48823 on Saturday, February 28, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior. A reception will follow the memorial service. February 28, 2015 at 11:50 amJust wanted the family to know what an excellent reference book Professor VerBurg wrote entitled “Guide To Michigan County Government”. In my 34 years as Genesee County Senior Assistant Corporation Counsel I had many occasions to refer to his book when I had legal issues to resolve, or just to educate myself regarding “county law” and giving excellent legal advice to the Genesee County Board of Commissioners over the years. As a graduate of MSU (B.A. 1959;M.A. 1965) [UofD Law, 1970] I just wanted to express my appreciation for his (book) assistance in my practice of “Michigan County Law”. As we say in my Greek Orthodox religion: “May his memory be eternal”
