Kastantinos “Gus” Peponis

Age 88, of Haslett, Michigan, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2025, in Lansing, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on August 30, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, Gus proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and later worked for The Detroit News, where he was a dedicated employee and proud member of the Teamsters. Deeply proud of his Greek heritage, Gus carried forward the traditions, values, and warmth of his culture throughout his life—especially in the way he gathered people, shared food, and made everyone feel welcome.

Gus lived a full and joyful life centered around family and friends. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and friends—especially when it involved traveling, boating, fishing, or simply sharing stories. He enjoyed going to the casino, was a dedicated weekly lottery player, and could always find fun in life’s little moments. An avid sports fan, Gus could be found cheering for his favorite teams or watching a good game of any kind. He loved going to MSU basketball games but always said he had to watch Michigan games too—because that’s where his money went. Later in life, he discovered a passion for horses and harness racing, proudly owning several racehorses. He also had a special love for animals, particularly dogs, and enjoyed feeding the deer that visited his garden.

Known for his quick wit, kind heart, and generosity with his time, Gus had a way of making everyone he met feel like an old friend. He made fast friends wherever he went, and people were instantly drawn to his warmth and humor. His strength, positivity, and genuine care for others left a lasting mark on all who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret; his children, Catherine (Terry) Matthews and Michael (Cindy) Peponis; and his treasured grandchildren, Michael, Lily, Catherine, and Cole. Gus is also survived by his sister Theodora and was preceded in death by his siblings Christos and Sophia.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the Trisagion at 7:00 p.m. at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Washtenaw St., Lansing. The funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 27, 2025, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1701 E. Saginaw St., Lansing, Michigan.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

Gus will be remembered for his love of life, his generosity of spirit, and the laughter he brought to those around him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.

Gus may not have been the safest driver, but at least every journey was exciting.
He left the world a better place than he found it, and luckily for us, he left us with great memories, which we can all treasure.

Rest in peace Gus – it was a pleasure to have known you.

Gus lived a life that was just…beautiful. It was built on so much love, so much laughter, and connections that mean everything. Everyone who knew him has these memories that just stick with you. He had this warmth about him and the most generous heart. The way he loved his family, his friends, even the animals in his life. It showed the depth of who he was. He might be gone now, and that hurts, but the joy and kindness he gave to the world? That’s his legacy, and it lives on in every heart he touched.

I had some of the best conversations ever in life with Gus. Something I will never forget is his grumpiness when I cleaned his house but he would always have an ice cold six pack that we would share right when I was done. We traveled to the casino many times spent lots of laughs. He will be greatly missed such a wonderful kindhearted person.

Our families were neighbors when he lived in Warren; we spent many happy times together in the 1980’s. He was generous and often invited us up to his cottage or out on his boat. I’m sorry to hear about his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with Margaret, Cathy, and Mike.
