Kareen “Kay” Lund

Kareen “Kay” Lund, age 72, of Lansing, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2018. She was surrounded in love at her bedside with her husband and 3 daughters.

Kay was born August 26, 1945, in Wareham, Massachusetts, to Howard and Veronica Grevenow. She moved to Michigan when she was 7. In her youth, Kay was an avid swimmer, lifeguard, swimming instructor and enjoyed waterskiing barefoot.

She married Frank Lubinski (from Detroit) at age 17, had 3 daughters, and divorced in 1968. Despite many challenges in her early years, Kay worked tirelessly in the service industry to raise her children as a single mother. She remarried in 1980 to her faithful love, David Charles Lund of Lansing. She was a devoted wife and was to celebrate their 38th wedding anniversary May 30.

In 1996 and again in 2003, Kay won the battle against breast cancer. Her strength and perseverance for life showed in everything she did. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and loyal friend. Kay had a variety of interests and talents, some of which were cooking, gardening, reading, creating mosaic art, boating with her husband, traveling and entertaining. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Kay would not let you leave the house without a care package of her homemade cookies. She loved conversation and often people would strike one up with her when she was just out shopping. She had a way about her that made people feel special and, as always, her sense of humor shined through. Kay was always the first to offer her help (sometimes anonymously) to anyone in need. Her adventurous spirit led her to many travel destinations where she parasailed over the Gulf of Mexico, zip lined in Las Vegas and white water rafted in Colorado. Her next daredevil adventure was to be indoor skydiving.

Kay will be remembered for her charismatic personality, loving and caring soul, generosity and her energetic flair.  Kay left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was a one of a kind gem that had a sparkle in her eye and a contagious laugh. We are so blessed and thankful to have been a part of her life, she will be greatly missed.

Kay is survived by the love of her life, husband David; three daughters: Pamela (Mark) Coven of Ovid, MI, Sandra (Donald) Wagner of AZ, and Laura Stanbury of Lansing; four granddaughters: Leigh (David) Middleton of Elsie, MI, Cassidy Coven of VA, Melanie Coven of Bath, MI, and Betsy (Jason) Souza of DeWitt, MI; stepchildren: Jeffrey Lund (Grandchildren: David and Lacy Lund) of Lansing, and Kerry Lund (Don Andrews) of Lansing; and eight great-grandchildren: Dylan, Kole, Kamryn, Raina, Dawson, Jamari, Zepelin and Veda. Kay was preceded in death by her sister: Kathleen of OR and stepdaughter: Diane Lund of Lansing.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2018, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Condolences may be sent to:  www.estesleadley.com/obituaries/kareen-lund

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Breast Cancer Foundation: www.abcf.org/donate

We’ll always remember Kay, as she brought us over (the best) chocolate chip cookies when we moved into the neighborhood. R.I.P. sweet neighbor/friend.

David, I am sending this for Sandy Stanton. I am her sister Judi, my husband Bill and I met you and Kay, at Bernies boat. Bill passed away last August. Sandy is not in the best of health, but wanted me to let you know how sad she felt that Kay has passed. She is not up to the memorial, but we both want you to know we care and will be thinking of you. Hugs!
