Joseph R. Maurer

Age 79, of East Lansing, passed away on March 22, 2012.  He was born in Lansing on September 22, 1932 the eldest son of Joseph and Frances Maurer.  He was a lifelong member of The Church of the Resurrection; an usher, Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and a graduate of Resurrection High School.   He was a partner in the family business, Maurer’s Sanitary Cleaners.  He was a Past President of the Michigan Institute of Launderers and Dry Cleaners.  Joe was extremely knowledgeable in his profession, having been a mentor and friend to everyone, taking young associates in the dry cleaning business under his wing.  Joe was the recipient of the Mike O’Neil Dry Cleaner Award.

Surviving are:  5 children, Joseph W. (Gail) Maurer, Mike (Barbara) Maurer, John (Deborah) Maurer, Robert (Ruth) Maurer, Ann (Carl) Chaffee; 8 grandchildren, Joe, Daniel (Kelly), Matt, Steve, Caroline, Amanda, Tommy, and Lauren; 7 siblings, Dick (Sonia), Mary Jane (Donald) Knapp, Doug (Nancy), Larry, Tom (Dixie), Bill (Sue), Cris (Dave) Verhougstraete, many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Daryl Kesler; special cousin, Mary Belen.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jean in 2009, sister-in-law Diana Kesler, and special cousin, Gilbert Belen.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Fr. James Eisele at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 26, 2012 at The Church of the Resurrection, 1505 E. Michigan Ave. Lansing, with the Rite of Committal at Deepdale Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2:30-4:30 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, where the Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association or The Church of the Resurrection.
