John Herman Schneider

Age 74, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 25, 2023, surrounded by his devoted wife and other loving family and friends. John loved the Lord, and was a blessing to all who knew him. While his passing was all too soon, it was a comfort to know he was at peace and no longer suffering. While a gentle, quiet man, John could come up with unexpected zingers. He loved his cats, most recently Lilly and Woody, the Detroit Tigers, a good glass of red wine, and most important, his soul mate and “Hoola Girl,” Debbie Sue.

John Herman Schneider was born on September 5, 1948, to Herman and Mary Schneider of Portland, Michigan. John lived most of his early life in Portland, along with his parents and twin siblings Barb and Bernie. John was 50 years old and never married when he met Debbie, also never married, through an online dating service. This was in December of 1998. It was pretty clear soon after their first date that they were destined to be together. John proposed in April of 1999, and they were married on August 14, 1999, in Holt, Michigan. This began their joyful marriage adventure.

John enjoyed traveling anywhere with Debbie, sometimes at a moment’s notice. He loved taking trips to visit family and friends in Michigan and Maryland. The adventures of John and Debbie included cruising Lake Michigan and the Caribbean, train trips to Chicago, and a bus ride through New England. He also journeyed with Deb to Florida, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Sonoma Valley and San Francisco, as well as New Orleans, LA.

John was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by Debbie, his wife of 24 years, his sister Barbara & husband Donnie of Manistee, MI, his brother Bernard & wife Minda of Lansing, MI, brother-in-law David & wife Debbie, and many other loving family members.

Contributions in John’s honor may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society, or Holt Christian Church.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., at Holt Christian Church, 2424 Washington Rd, Lansing, MI 48911. Arrangements by Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel.

John will be missed and I feel grateful for having had the chance to get to know him as a neighbor and friend. Our Zoom Monopoly games during COVID where the Debbie and John duo where tough to beat, will always make me smile. Rest in peace, John.
