John Edward Theroux

John Edward Theroux, age 78, of Holt, Michigan, passed away September 6, 2024.  He was born November 1, 1945, to Jean (née Whyte) and Louis Theroux, in Dayton, Ohio, and grew up there and in Acton, Massachusetts, where he attended high school.  John graduated from Murray State University in Kentucky, earning a bachelor’s degree in history.  After college he returned to the East Coast and held diverse jobs, including in long-haul trucking and as an insurance actuary.  In 1977 he moved to Michigan to be near family and continued in trucking, eventually accepting a position at Lansing Community College, where he helped to build their truck driver training program.  He later became head of the department and remained in that position until his retirement in 2013, and he served as an appointee of the Michigan governor on the Michigan Truck Safety Commission.  In retirement John accepted the Vice Presidency of Theroux Development Company in Holt, Michigan, where he served until his passing.

John loved cold weather and was an ardent hockey fan (Go Bruins!).  He loved unusual cars, and classic Citroëns in particular.  He was an avid bicyclist, even in the snow, and loved books about biking and other vehicle adventures around the world.  But John will be remembered by most for his sense of humor and distinctive attire, consisting typically of shorts and sandals all year round.

John is survived by two children, son Joshua and daughter Mia Mooney, his soon-to-be three grandsons, his fiancée, Karen Elaine Dupree, and Lyilah, Tay, and Sophia-Violet Johnson, her grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by sister Kathleen and parents Louis and Jean Theroux.

The funeral service will be held at Noon on Friday, September 13, 2024, at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, with interment to follow in Maple Ridge Cemetery.  His family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10-12 and 4-7 on Thursday, as well as one hour prior to the funeral service on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Norte Youth Cycling based in Traverse City, Michigan, or Aurelius Road Baptist Church in Holt.

I was shocked to read of John’s passing! I had many interesting visits with him during my employment at Ironwood, He often talked often about Karen, hockey, truck driving along with many other topics. He was always kind and his sense of humor was great.
I will never understand his desire to wear shorts and sandals year round!
He was one of the good ones and he will be missed!
May he rest in peace

John and I were “best buddies” in high school, and though not in touch continuously, remained so through our email correspondence in recent years.

We both grew up in Ohio and moved to Acton, MA just as we were entering high school there. We shared many happy times together “back in the day,” and he will live on in many happy memories.

He was a good, kind, and happy man. May he rest in peace.
