Joel Edward Burris “Poppa Joe”

Air Force Veteran, beloved husband, father, brother, and uncle, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at the age of 70 on he and Jeanne’s 39th wedding anniversary.  He was surrounded by his family, in his LazyBoy watching the Lions game, calling on their defense.

He was the most loving spouse and truly the most generous man.  His kindness, compassion, and unwavering love touched the lives of everyone who knew him.  Joe gave freely of himself, whether through a helping hand, a listening ear, or his time and energy, he always put others before himself.

He is survived by his wife Jeanne; his son, Jonathon (Penny) Snyder; daughter, Ronna (Adam) Davis; grandchildren, Chris (Brooke) Sabin, Zak (Hannah) Snyder, Drew (Dominic) Mosher, Hunter (Taylie) Davis, and Zane Snyder; great-grandchildren, Kaiyah and Masonn Snyder; siblings, Pam Rethamel, Angela (Jim) Froh, and Jacqueline (Jim) Grandt, along with many dear nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Burris and his brother-in-law, Dennis Rethamel.

He will be remembered not only for his love of family, but also for his remarkable generosity, sense of humor, and the way he made every person feel valued and cared for.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at he and Jeanne’s home, 638 Ridgewood Ave, Lansing, MI 48910 on Saturday, August 23, 2025.  It will start at 2:00 p.m. with the rendering of Military Honors.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions, in loving memory of Poppa Joe, to the Wounded Warriors Project, the Greater Lansing Food Bank, or the Lansing City Rescue Mission.

You’ll always be in our hearts Poppa, We love you!
