Jody Lynn Murphy

Born Jody Lynn Smith on November 14, 1954 in Denver, Colorado.  Her parents were Howell Hudson (Bo) Smith and Beverly Lois Smith (Harris).  Jody passed away Saturday, November 14, 2020. Surviving is her husband of 23 years Robert “Bob” Murphy, Jody’s two sons, Dennis Newman (Sue), and James “Jim” Newman, and four very precious grandchildren – Natalie, David, Lauren, and Jackson “Jack”.  Additionally, surviving are one brother Charles “Chip” Smith (Karen) and their children Charles “Chippers”, Mary Alyssa, and a deceased daughter Rebecca Smith; and Jody’s half-sister, Rhonda (Chuck) Gadway. Jody has a deceased sister Jill (John) Garcia and their daughters are Jessica and Sarah.  Also, there are other treasured aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews from both Jody and Bob’s families, and precious friends – both living and deceased.

For a time, Jody lived in Sault Ste. Marie and worked in the Library at Lake Superior State University, before moving to Lansing where she first worked at Breslin Cancer Center.  Jody then took a job at the state headquarters of the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventists where she has worked for more than 27 years.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2020, at the Lansing Seventh-day Adventist Church, 5400 W. St. Joseph Hwy, Lansing, MI 48917.

Attendance will be limited due to COVID-19 restrictions, and a first-come-first served on-line reservation system will be used to determine who will be able to be there in-person.  Here is the link for registration if you are interested:  https://lansingadventist.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/649786

The service will also be live-streamed for those who prefer to not be in such a large group setting due to health concerns, or who are not able to make a reservation before the service attendance openings are full. The live-streaming link can be found on the Lansing SDA church’s web page at:  www.lansingadventist.org  under the LIVE tab on the top right of the home screen.  If you have a video streaming device such as a ROKU the service should also be viewable on YouTube by searching for the Lansing Adventist Church YouTube Live-stream channel.  If you miss it, or are unable to be there in-person it should become available for replay once the program gets posted on YouTube.

We (Jody’s family) very much appreciate the willingness of the Lansing SDA church to host this event in Jody’s memory, and we thank everyone involved in making this service possible.  Also, thank you for all of the many kind gestures of prayer, cards, calls, flowers, food, financial, and charitable contributions given to me (Bob), the Lansing Seventh-day Adventist church, or the Mayo Clinic’s Bioartificial Liver Research program (under “tribute information” please indicate the gift is in memory of Jody Lynn Murphy). Mayo Clinic Department of Development, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, MN 55905.

Your caring and love has been amazing!

Jody was the love of my brother’s life, his closest companion and best supporter. During her difficult transition and afterwards she and Bob have received numerous expressions of love, concern, and help from relatives, neighbors, and friends in their faith community. These reflect Jody’s beautiful qualities and that of the bond they shared. We know that Bob very much appreciates these expressions now and they will help sustain him until Jody and he are reunited in the next life.

To all of those who have left memories and words of love, encouragement and support – thank you! I am thankful that Jody opened her heart to me, and for the good life and good marriage we had. I am missing Jody now, but looking forward to our reunion when Jesus returns. Bob

Hello everyone.

It has now been about 1 year since Jody’s death, on her 66th birthday. Life without her has been so tremendously hard. I miss her each day, in ways I can’t even begin to list. Life with Jody was truly a blessing, and I am so thankful that God gave us 23 years together in marriage. Jody was my best friend, and the perfect wife for me.
In honor, and in memory of Jody on the first anniversary of her death, I am posting the recipe’s for Jody’s bread, and her cinnamon rolls. Her cinnamon roll recipe was the first food that I ever ate that Jody made, and as I’m sure you all know, she was a really good cook.
If you are someone who loves to cook for your family and friends, I hope that if you choose to make a batch of these cinnamon rolls, it will give you a reason to smile and help reflect back on a happy memory of Jody, and how she may have touched your life.
The hope that I will see her again, and soon, gives me my peace, my joy, and my hope. Blessings to you all. Bob

Jody Murphy’s Bread and Cinnamon Rolls Recipe

Basic Bread Dough
2 cups warm water (test on inside of wrist)
2 tbsp. dry yeast
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 egg
6 1/2—7 cups flour
Combine water and yeast in bowl and stir with whisk until well
blended. Then add the next 4 ingredients—stirring after each ingredient.
Then start adding flour about a cup at a time. When it
starts to get stiff, switch to a wooden spoon and keep adding flour
until too hard to stir. Then place on flour covered counter and
knead until no longer sticky—yet not dry.
Place in greased bowl and cover with dish towel and put in the refrigerator.
Leave in refrigerator at least 2 hours. (I leave overnight.)
Divide in half. Shape and place into greased loaf pan and bake at
325 degrees for about 50 minutes. Makes 2 loaves.

Cinnamon Rolls
Bread dough from above recipe
1/2 cup butter (softened)
1/2 light brown sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon
1-2 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups powdered sugar
Roll on floured counter till about ½ inch thick in oblong shape. Using the
back of a spoon, spread with light layer of butter. Cover with thin layer of
brown sugar and sprinkle with cinnamon. Roll into log from long side. Cut
into 1 1/2” thick slices and place in two greased 9”x13” backing pans. Let
rise for about one hour. Bake at 325 degrees for 18-20 minutes or until gold
brown. Remove from oven. Using small mixing bowl with a fork, blend
powered sugar, milk and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle over cinnamon
rolls. Make about 24 cinnamon rolls using two 9”x13” baking dishes.
