James Allan Living

Holt, MI

Born at home July 1937 to Clarence and Marquis Living in Buckingham, Quebec, Canada, Jim has passed away at his home with loved ones there on June 25, 2024, age 86.

He was a star hockey player from the time he could walk, and he was signed to the New York Rangers.  However, coming home from a championship game they had won, their van was hit by a drunk driver and that ended his dreams of pro hockey.

In the late 50s he joined Spartan Air Services in Ottawa, Canada, and this took him all over the world as an aerial photographer.  They were flying Mosquitos, a WWII fighter bomber built for combat but never were used in the war as the war had ended.  On one of his jobs in the Bahamas, he met his future wife, Carole North, a flight attendant with Eastern Air Lines and they married the following year in 1959.  With his wife with him, Jim worked in Colombia S.A. and Argentina. Their first child, Christopher, was born in late 1963 and when Jim received a job offer from Abrams Aerial Survey in Lansing, the family moved to Lansing and finally settled in Holt where their second son, Gregory, was born.  In the early 80s Jim received an offer to work for Woolpert Engineering headquartered in Dayton, Ohio, in marketing and sales.  When he retired the pair started more travel in the states and abroad.

Hockey continued to remain a big part of his life.  He was a linesman at MSU and served as a referee in the Western Collegiate Hockey League.  He was also very active in civic affairs.

Jim will be missed, no doubt about it.  Missed most sorely by his family.  He was the last of his five siblings to pass away.  He is survived by his loving wife, Carole, sons Chris and Greg, daughter-in-law Dianna, grandsons Joseph and Jackson, and numerous nieces and nephews all over North America.

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, 2121 N. Cedar St., Holt. His family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday and beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Lansing Central Alcoholics Anonymous, 1915 E. Michigan Ave., Suite D, Lansing, MI 48912, or The Capital Humane Society, 7095 W. Grand River Ave., Lansing, MI 48906.

Jim was a great inspiration to a lot of people including me. He was straight forward and always spoke his mind but didn’t offend, as he always did it with Love. I will really miss him.

I call them “Jiminisms”; so many things that he said that I remember everyday and have adapted as part of my life. I want what he had.

I don’t think we ever met but I have heard great things about him. Wish I had the opportunity…I will be there to send him off though.

Jim was a very good decent man…he loved Carole (he so often teasingly called her just “Living!”), his sons and grandsons—-and of course, the many dogs he and Carole brought into their lives. Gosh, he leaves a big hole in their lives, and those of his friends…

One of the very best,

A man who knew who he was and was always a source of inspiration. I never saw him turn down an opportunity to be of service to others. His legacy will live on in the lives of those for who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Farewell my friend

Jim was a good friend, I met him when he worked with Abrams and then Woorpert. I only saw him four times a year at survey conferences, but we would go and have dinner together and talk. Jim you will be missed, I am sure.

Jim Living inspired me to get on my knees everyday to pray to God for another day of sobriety!
His impact on my life, and so many others is immeasurable! R.I.P. Jim.

I had the privilege of being in Jim’s presence on many occasions. You could warm your hands on the love that radiated from him. Always looked forward to spending time with him and the great example that he left for us to follow. He shared his Experience,Strength ,and Hope with all. Look forward to seeing him again.May the Peace of the Lord be with all who love Jim.

I’m so sorry, Carole, I met Jim at Soldan’s Dog Park.
He was a kind, thoughtful man, who loved each of the dogs. I know how you stood beside him and walked with him.

I’m so sorry to read of Jim’s death, and I’m sending my love to Carole and the rest of the family. Getting Jim in a story-telling mood was one of the highlights of working at Woolpert; and working with him on a project was always a delight. Rest in peace, dear Jim.

I have no idea why I thought of Jim tonight and google him! We were competitors and friends in the early 90s. What a character! As recently as a week ago I told
one of the best stories I ever heard about Jim and told best by Jim.

May he rest in peace and may the Good Lord comfort his family.
