Helen (Markoff) Nicholoff

Age 87, of Lansing, MI, passed away July 29, 2014.  She was born in Lansing March 19, 1927.  She was devoted to the Orthodox faith as a founding member of St. Andrew Eastern Orthodox Church, and a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.  She was a member of the Sisterhood of St. Helen.  She enjoyed working for the State of Michigan Dept. of Conservation until leaving there to raise her 3 sons, attending all of their sporting events, encouraging them to learn and to work hard.  She then spent 10 years with First of America Bank.  She loved to cook the traditional Macedonian dishes, and will be remembered for her loving ways and contagious smile.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Phillip K. in 2011; son, Paul in 2008; grandson, Phillip James “P.J.”; her parents; sister, Ruth Pogoncheff; and brother, George Markoff.  Surviving are:  2 sons, Brian (Barbara) Nicholoff of Carmel, IN and Kris (Heather) Nicholoff of Haslett; 4 grandchildren, Justin, Drew, Steven and Paula; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 1, 2014, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1701 E. Saginaw St., Lansing, with Fr. Mark Sietsema, PhD, officiating.  Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, where the Trisagion will be held at 7:00 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to Muscular Dystrophy Assoc. (Duchenne Research).

Mom was the best mother-in-law a girl could ask for. Mom always had the kindest words and disposition. She never intruded and yet had the right things to say at the right times. I believe that is why we had such a special relationship. I loved her as much as my own mom and well really miss her as I know so many others well too.
