Harold C. Slater
Age 87, of Lansing, MI, passed away March 3, 2014. He was born May 30, 1926, in Lansing, MI, the son of Clarence and Emily (Bonach) Slater.
Harold was a resident of Lansing his entire life. Nicknamed “Big Red” for his red hair, he graduated from Sexton High School in 1945 and served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. In 1948, Harold married his DEAR WIFE, Arlene Hein, and began to raise their family. He worked as an insurance agent for State Farm Insurance Co. for 35 years. Harold was a lifelong member of Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Harold enjoyed and embraced life in so many ways. He was an avid wood worker and carpenter leaving his trademark signature, HCS, on numerous projects. He enjoyed traveling, camping trips with his family, life at the cottage, bird watching and feeding, using his ability to sketch ideas, golfing, spending time with friends, and most importantly, family time.
He is survived by his DEAR WIFE of 65 years, Arlene; daughter, Arlee Anne Slater; sons, Kirk (Susan) Slater and Steven (Suzi) Slater; grandchildren, Andrew Slater, Mathew Slater, Meagan (Rob) Pollit and Marty (Susan) Barnes; and great-grandson, Gavin Barnes.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 7, 2014, at Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1001 N. Capitol Ave., Lansing, with the Rev. Paul J. Lindloff officiating. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, March 6, 2014, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel and one hour prior to the service time on Friday at the church. Memorial donations, in Harold’s memory, may be made to the Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church Debt Retirement Fund.
