George H. Gallup

Born November 18, 1927 to Clifford and Kathleen Gallup, passed away March 24, 2018 surrounded by family.  George is survived by his loving wife, Kay; children, Scott (Cathlee), Kathy (Joe) Popoff, Brian (Betsy); grandchildren, Ben (Becky) Popoff, Elliot Popoff (Kathleen Davey), Andrew (Becca) Gallup, Jamie Gallup; great grandchildren, Cooper and Mia Popoff.

George was a long-time member of St Paul’s Episcopal Church where he served as an usher and a Stephen Minister.

George grew up in Jackson Michigan. He attended Michigan State University, where he earned a degree in Geology. His studies were interrupted by a two-year stint in the US Army. When he returned to MSU, he met the love of his life, Kay Cogswell. This started their love story that would span 7 decades. After graduation they were wed July 28, 1951 and moved to Jackson. In 1961 George began his long career with the Michigan Department of Transportation. During his time at MDOT, he became the department’s expert on aggregates, where he developed and led the state’s Aggregate Inspector Certification Program. After retiring from the State of Michigan, he became the Executive Director of the Michigan Mineral Resource Association.

George had many interests over the years, gardening, rocks, shells, genealogy and stamp collecting. His favorite time was the time he spent with friends, family and Kay. He and Kay traveled extensively and visited many sites throughout the world.

The opportunity to help and support friends and family was his driving force. No matter what the problem was, he was always there to lend a hand, provide his support or to just quietly be there. As Kay began her health struggles, his one and only purpose was to take care of her. He spent years as her caretaker making sure she was safe and protected. Even after moving to Assisted Living he would not relinquish his caregiver role until the very end.

Dad the time has come to put down your struggles and cares. You have shown us all what great love is, you have earned your rest. We love you, we miss you, you are our rock.

The family thanks the staff at Burcham Hills and McLaren Hospice for the care and comfort they have provide.

The family will have a memorial visitation from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.  A memorial service will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Burcham Hills Foundation or McLaren Hospice in George’s memory.
