Gary L. Lewis

Gary, of Lansing, MI, passed away April 22, 2023, at the age of 86. He was born August 22, 1936, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the son of Arthur and Opal (Smith) Lewis. He loved bluegrass music, hunting, pony pulling and camping with his family.

He married Margaret J. Lewis, from Sarnia, Ontario, on June 14, 1958. He decided to come to the United States on August 31, 1961, to attend college to become a math teacher. He received his B.A. in mathematics from the University of Michigan (also attended CMU and MSU).

He taught mathematics at Waverly High School from 1963-1990 (also taught drivers education). After retirement from Waverly High School, he worked at Erickson Learning Center as a math tutor until 2011.

Surviving are his children, Jennifer L. (Todd) Nelson, Mary J. (Cliff) Bradfield, Bill M. (Ginny) Lewis, and Ronald L. (Mary) Lewis; grandchildren, Matthew, James, Robert, Chloe, and Hope; great-grandchildren, Mia, McKayla, Cassandra, Aaliyah, Andrew, and Antonio; and brother, Art (Barb) Lewis. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and son Gary L. Lewis Jr.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2023, at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, with interment to follow in Maple Ridge Cemetery. His family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fairview Adult Foster Care, 11656 N. Hartel Rd., Grand Ledge, MI 48837 or to the Capital Area Humane Society, 7095 W. Grand River Ave., Lansing, MI  48906.

I had Mr. Lewis for algebra at Waverly during the 74-76 school year.
He always took time to assist those of us who aren’t great at math.
He also kept ponies while he lived on Stoll Rd. and he would ride through our neighborhood when he hitched up his pony cart.

I had Mr. Lewis for math at Waverly. I remember him as one of those teachers that cared for his students and was always there when you needed a help.

Uncle Gary was always the “fun” uncle. He had such a vitality and love for life. My memories of Christmas visits are filled with love and laughter.
