Frederick Duane Rieger

Age 99, passed away in Lansing, MI, on August 30, 2026. He was born in Jackson, MI, on March 12, 1927. Fred attended Albion Public Schools, Albion College, and graduated with a civil engineering degree from TriState University, Angola, IN. He was a bridge engineer with Michigan Dept. of Transportation for 37 years, retiring as district engineer in 1989. Fred was a veteran of WWII and Korea, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of University Lutheran Church in East Lansing, the Lansing Liederkrantz Club, and Oyster Creek Golf Club in Englewood, FL. He enjoyed golfing, genealogy, photography, and dancing.
Surviving are his wife, Irene; daughter, Julie Mateer of Lansing; son, Stephen (Loretta) Rieger of Seattle, WA; stepdaughter, Dale Burnworth of Lansing; grandchildren, Kevin (Shanell) Mateer, Scott (Laura) Mateer, Kathryn (Evan) Anderson, Jeffrey Mateer, Brian Rieger, Leah Rieger, Melissa Berlin, Megan Burton, and Mallory Burton; step-grandson, Alexander Burnworth; 15 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Hugo and Ella Rieger of Albion; daughter, Nancy Burton; sister, Hazel (Raymond) Carlson-Starnal; and brothers, Walter (Pauline), Howard (Roberta), Robert (Mary), and William (Edna Mae).
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Lansing. His family will receive relatives and friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the City Rescue Mission of Lansing.
