Eugene C. Matz

Age 93, of Lansing, MI, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017, in Charlotte. He was born October 2, 1924, in Holt to the late Charles and Nellie (Swan) Matz.

Eugene is survived by his three children: Carol (Gary) Fedewa, Mary (Bill) DeGrow, and Michael (Tania) Matz; five grandchildren: Ben Fedewa, Kris Fedewa (fiancée Eva Narvaez), Greg Fedewa, Nick Fedewa, and Courtney Matz (fiancé Matt Polos); three great-grandchildren: Jeremias DeMott, Luz DeMott, and Bella Fedewa; many nieces and nephews; much loved cousin: Paul E. Swan; and many extended family members of the late Rose Spitzley. He will also be missed by his favorite grandpet Ursa.

Eugene was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Dorothy K. (Spitzley) Matz and two sisters: Barbara Frost and Shirley McComb and many Spitzley family in-laws.

Eugene was a lifelong Lansing area resident.  He served in the 1st Division, US Marine Corps in Okinawa during WWII, where he was injured and received a Purple Heart.  Eugene retired from the United States Postal Service following 32 dedicated years of service.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his motorcycle, and time at the family cottage.  When his children were younger, Eugene and his family enjoyed many summer weeks camping all around Michigan.  He was also a longtime member of Church of the Resurrection.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Behavioral Health at St. Lawrence Hospital, to the women residents and staff in the Green neighborhood at Grand Haven Living Center, to the staff of both Eaton Community Palliative Care and Compassus Hospice and Palliative Care for the exceptional care shown to the father.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Fr. Eric Weber at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at St. Mary Parish, 201 N. Westphalia St., Westphalia, MI.  Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Westphalia.  The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Friday, January 5th, from 3-6 p.m. where the Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clinton County Arts Council – Music in the Park (St. Johns) or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Dear Mary,
I am so sorry to hear of the death of your father. He raised a wonderful daughter – you. I am glad you were able to spend some time with him over Christmas. Those memories you will always treasure.
