Duane H. Bartrem, Ret. Col.

Grand Ledge, Michigan.

He went on, 27 July, 2018, to be with his beloved Frances, who preceded him to their heavenly home on 19 January, 2000.  They were married on 12 September, 1948.  Duane attended MSU on a Navy program and later joined the Michigan National Guard where he served in a full time status for many years, ending his career there as Comptroller.  He later completed his degree at Columbia College.  His Guard assignments included Commander 119th Field Artillery Battalion, and Commander 46th Brigade.  He retired in May of 1983 as a full colonel with nearly 37 years of total service.  Military decorations include:  Army Commendation, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit and several service ribbons.

An active Scouter for over 50 years, he was awarded the Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope, God and Service Award and the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. Duane was a longtime member of the Downtown Coaches Club and was an avid MSU fan and supporter.  He is survived by two sons, Lawrence (Ann) and Jeffrey (Anne); and three grandchildren, Casey Lyn, Mitchell, and Kyle; and a brother, Douglas (Mary); two sisters-in-law, Pearl (Leland) Brooks, Norma (William) Sheathelm and several nieces and nephews.

Religious Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 1, 2018, at Bretton Woods Covenant Church, 925 Bretton Road, Lansing.  Interment will be at Deepdale Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Chief Okemos Boy Scouts of America or to his church for a memorial to be established in his name.

The Boy Scouts of America has lost a great Distinguished Eagle Scout. Over the years Duane contributed so much to the Scouting movement and in particular to the Chief Okemos Council. He will be truly missed. I would like to extend my heart felt condolence to the family and friends.

I’ve tried several time to write this and I just cannot express how much Duane is going to be missed not only by us but by all who called him friend. He loved God and Bretton Woods Covenant Church and was dedicated to both. Thanks for being a friend, Duane. Say ‘Hi’ to Fran.

Colonel Bartrem will be missed greatly by his connection at MSU Army ROTC. I have worked with him for many years with the various organizations he belonged to. I would contact him for awards and he would coordinate getting them for me or bring them to me. I considered him a friend and a joy to know. I will miss him. He was always a pleasure to have attend our functions. Thank you for your service Duane, you were a gem!

I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to meet and get to know Mr. Bartrem during my employment with the Boy Scouts. A very strong distinguished man, with a soft side and willingness to help others. I respected his willingness to help others. I could always count on him to assist me, as long as he wasn’t out of town supporting his Spartans. I enjoyed the wonderful stories and that little smile. I never got a chance to try his key lime pie but I hear it was amazing. Thank you for your service to your country and the Scouting program. May your family now be blessed and comforted with amazing memories of a great man.

Larry and Ann, so sorry for your loss. Duane was a very special man who we knew from many golf adventures at GLCC, the Boy Scouts, as the person who drew our House Plans, and as your Father. A very diverse individual that we had the pleasure of knowing. May your memories provide you the strength to carry you through this transition. We are unable to attend his memorial, but will be thinking of your family tomorrow. Love Steve and Laura Pratt
