Dr. Harold E.B. Humphrey
Dr. Harold Humphrey, age 77, passed away on December 24, 2017, following a recent illness. Harold was born and raised in Lansing, Michigan, where he graduated from Sexton High School in 1958. Harold then continued his education earning both his Bachelors and Master of Science degrees at The University of Michigan, and a PhD in Microbiology and Public Health from Michigan State University in 1970. Upon graduation, he secured a US Patent and formed the company Kelmik. After selling the company, he later went on to have a distinguished career in epidemiology, working for the Michigan Department of Public Health. Among Harold’s many accomplishments, he is best known for his role in designing the first Great Lakes Fish Eaters Study and the Michigan Long Term PBB Study. Harold also published over 50 scientific articles and appeared in the National Geographic Magazine in 1987. Harold’s greatest joys in life, however, revolved around spending many summers sailing on the Great Lakes aboard his sailboat Shadowfax, and being with family at his summer home in Charlevoix, Michigan.
Harold is survived by the love of his life and wife of 54 years, Jane; his loving son, Jason; his two sisters, Christine and Barbara; as well as grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael.
We are all deeply saddened by the loss of this great man, and will miss his wisdom, wit, and guiding love.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 7, 2018, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. His family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 until service time on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church or to the Greater Lansing Food Bank in memory of Harold Humphrey. Online condolences may be left for his family at www.EstesLeadley.com.

December 28, 2017 at 11:21 amWe are so sorry to lose our next-door neighbor and friend Hal, with whom we shared care of the hedge, and red wine, and Ryke’s butter cookies from Muskegon, along with the beautiful gardens he tended so carefully. The scent of his pipe on a crisp winter morning was a welcome greeting, and he will be missed. Our fond sympathies to Jane, and wishes for gentle healing to all of Hal’s loved ones.

December 29, 2017 at 11:59 amJane and Chris,
We cannot express how sad we are. Hal was such a brightness in our little Villas of Stover Creek world. We were always delighted when we arrived at our condo from our downstate home when we saw that Hal and Jane were also there. If there is any way in which we can help, please let us know. Thinking of you and the entire family.

December 29, 2017 at 5:49 pmOnce again December touches your lives in so many ways. May you know a special peace that we cannot understand but that can reassure you that God keeps His promises of love and life everlasting. Accept His arms on your shoulder in this, another difficult, passage. With heartfelt regret, Peg, Steve, and family
